FIRST-EVER SKI DOWN MOUNT EVEREST

VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Presented by Red Bull

Ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel becomes the first person to climb Mount Everest and ski back to Everest Base Camp without supplementary oxygen.

After nearly 16 hours climbing in the high altitude “death zone” (above 8,000m where oxygen levels are dangerously low), Bargiel clipped into his skis on the summit of the tallest mountain on earth and started his descent via the South Col Route. He reached Camp II that night and rested - the summit ridge and Hillary Step had taken longer than planned, meaning darkness made it dangerous and difficult to navigate further that day.

The next morning, he skied through the treacherous Khumbu Icefall - guided by a drone flown by his brother, Bartek - before safely arriving at Base Camp to become the first person to ascend and descend Mount Everest on skis with no supplementary oxygen.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: LOCK'ER DOWN CONSOLE

Keeping your valuables safe with the Lock'er down center console

by Bill Dragoo

A buddy posted on Facebook that three pistols had just been stolen from his truck. That was the last straw. I hold a concealed carry permit and often keep a firearm within reach. And, like most people, I occasionally have the need to leave other valuables in my truck — a wallet, checkbook, bank deposit, etc. My friend’s plight spurred me to action. I was done playing the odds that my vehicle wouldn’t be the target of a heartbreaking theft. I recalled seeing a console safe in another friend’s truck a few years back. What was it called…Oh yeah! Lock’er Down! Good name. I found them online and placed my order.

WINTER FLY FISHING

A season on the fly like no other

by Sean Jansen

The irony wasn’t lost on me. Putting on fishing waders with cars driving past, skies attached to roof racks. It made sense. It’s the middle of winter and down the road is a ski resort. Most anglers prefer to ski this time of year, but I like to wade through deep powder and cast rather than ride someone else’s coat tails.

The challenge is serious, however. Starting the car in the morning with inches of powder on the windshield, the last thought is to stand in the freezing water all to get a glimmer of a fish. But that ode to solitary bliss is one filled with eager trout and a river devoid of humans, for good reason.

FIELD REVIEW: GRAYL GEOPRESS TI WATER PURIFIER

Water purification for outdoor, travel, and emergency preparedness

by Michael Holland

“There’s some water,” my good friend, Shane, commented.

“Perfect, let me fill up.” I responded.

We found ourselves deep in the canyons of Butch Cassidy country, Robber’s Roost, in south-central Utah. Our route led us through tight sandstone slot canyons; and now, we found ourselves in the more wide-open canyons in the search of water.

VAN LIFE 101: HOW-TO GUIDE FOR LIVING IN A VAN

Kristen Bor provides an excellent guide on preparing for van life

In 2016, I took the plunge into Sprinter Van Life. I sold my car, moved out of my apartment, and had a 4×4 144″ Sprinter built out into a tiny home on wheels with a full bathroom. After logging 30,000 miles and learning what I truly wanted in a van, I sold that first van and started over. The second time around, I went with a bigger 170″ 4×4 Sprinter Van that was converted by Outside Van. I ditched the bathroom, made room for mountain bikes and other outdoor gear, and never looked back.
