Stettler Community-Wide Garage Sale:
A Community-Wide Success!
| | |
What a weekend it was! The Stettler Community Wide Garage Sale brought our community together for a fantastic day of bargain hunting, visiting, selling, and supporting local.
A huge thank you to every seller who registered a sale and to everyone who came out to shop! Events like this simply wouldn’t be possible without the participation and enthusiasm of our community.
| | |
One of the highlights for us this year was seeing an increase in youth entrepreneur stands throughout the community. It was wonderful to see young people putting their creativity, initiative, and entrepreneurial spirit into action. To recognize their participation, each registered youth entrepreneur stand received $10 in Heart of Alberta Dollars, along with a personal thank-you note from us here at the Stettler Board of Trade to show our appreciation of their participation.
| | |
We also held a draw among all registered stands, and we were thrilled to award Milyn Peterson with our Grand Prize Package! Even better, Milyn is already putting her entrepreneurial wheels in motion and working on plans to make her stand even bigger and better next year. We can’t wait to see what she comes up with!
We heard lots of great feedback from both sellers and shoppers throughout the weekend, but one message from an out-of-town shopper really captured just how much this event can contribute to our community.
| | |
Visitors from Ponoka made a full weekend of their trip, arriving Friday afternoon, enjoying supper, picking up groceries, fueling up, staying overnight, and then hitting the garage sales bright and early Saturday morning. They managed to visit 95% of the registered sales before simply running out of time!
They shared how impressed they were with the ease of planning their day, the welcoming nature of our community, and the overall experience. While they didn’t have enough time to explore many of the businesses this trip, they are already planning to return next year for the Community Wide Garage Sale — and, just as exciting, they told us they are also planning a separate trip to Stettler specifically to explore and support our local businesses.
They left with a car full of bargains, great memories, and plans to come back — a wonderful reminder that an event like this can introduce new visitors to our community and inspire them to return, explore, shop, dine and experience even more of what Stettler has to offer.
| | |
That is exactly the kind of community impact we love to see. What may begin as a day of garage sales can become overnight stays, restaurant visits, fuel stops, grocery shopping, business visits and, most importantly, a reason for people to discover — and return to — Stettler.
Thank you once again to all of our sellers and shoppers who helped make the Stettler Community Wide Garage Sale such a success! Your participation, enthusiasm and community spirit are what make this event possible. We’re already looking forward to making next year’s event even bigger and better!

Canada’s provincial chambers welcome progress on internal trade, urge governments to turn commitments into results
| | |
September 2, 2026 - Edmonton, AB – Provincial and territorial chambers of commerce welcome decisions taken this week by federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for internal trade. Meeting in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Ministers agreed to accelerate work on model mutual-recognition legislation, ratified Canadian Free Trade Agreement amendments that set a 30-day service standard for labour-mobility applications, set firm dates to expand mutual recognition to services, and keep reducing barriers in food and alcohol.
The announcements track closely with Chambers of the Federation: An Agenda for a More Competitive Canada, the joint business framework presented to premiers in Charlottetown in July 2026. That agenda called on governments to move from commitment to implementation on internal trade, labour mobility and regulatory alignment, and to use the Committee on Internal Trade for timelines, accountability and public reporting.
“Five weeks ago, we called on premiers to accelerate progress on internal trade. This week, provinces and territories responded with concrete commitments: a 30-day labour mobility standard under the Canadian Free Trade Agreement, model mutual-recognition legislation targeted for the fall, and a December deadline for services. These are the clear, time-bound actions businesses have been asking for.” — Shauna Feth, President & CEO of the Alberta Chambers of Commerce
Chambers of the Federation specifically welcome:
- A dated path to one Canadian market. Ministers agreed to reach an agreement in principle by the end of fall 2026 on model mutual-recognition legislation to create a common Canadian market and support labour mobility, tightening the First Ministers commitment made in Charlottetown, and to meet again on October 2, 2026 to check progress.
- An enforceable 30-day labour-mobility standard. Ratified amendments to the Canadian Free Trade Agreement match the service standard chambers asked premiers to implement in July, alongside digital registries for tradespersons and common occupational health and safety training models to be recognized by January 1, 2027.
- Services, food and alcohol moving on a clock. Expanding the Canadian Mutual Recognition Agreement to services by December 2026, CFIA concierge support and a targeted interprovincial red-meat exemption, and continued work on alcoholic beverages building on the July Operating Agreement signed by nine premiers.
The Iqaluit meeting advanced the internal-trade and labour-mobility half of the July agenda. Chambers of the Federation will measure the October 2 session, and the months that follow, against the rest of that agenda:
- Time-bound regulatory reviews. Mandate ministries and regulators to identify and remove high-impact interprovincial barriers within 12–24 months, with public progress tracking.
- Corridors and grid connections. Identify and advance two to three nationally significant trade and energy corridors, and align provincial capital plans with east–west electricity transmission and northern energy access.
- Approvals for nation-building projects. Adopt a “pathways to yes” approach, single-window offices, aligned impact assessments and published priority-project timelines, in partnership with Indigenous nations and communities.
- Procurement that builds domestic capacity. Align systems, weight economic benefit and supply-chain resilience, publish forward pipelines, and pilot joint or bulk buying in strategic sectors.
- Supply-chain risk assessments. Complete assessments of critical energy, food and health-care supply chains within 12–18 months and put contingency plans in place.
With Canada–United States trade negotiations suspended, ministers were right to say that strengthening the economy at home is critical. Chambers of the Federation agree, and will continue to work with First Ministers, the Committee on Internal Trade and business members in every region to turn this week’s announcements into a single domestic market that workers and businesses can use.
| | Explore a Future in Healthcare at Skills Day 2026 | | |
What does a career in healthcare really look like? For high school students considering their future, Skills Day offers an opportunity to find out — through hands-on experiences, conversations with healthcare professionals and a behind-the-scenes look at the many career paths available in rural healthcare.
Skills Day will take place on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, and is designed primarily for students in Grades 11 and 12, with consideration for appropriate Grade 10 students. The event is free for students in the Stettler region, with lunch provided by Campus Alberta Central.
Throughout the day, students will hear directly from local healthcare providers, participate in a Q&A panel featuring professionals from a variety of healthcare careers, and take part in interactive skills stations where they can try their hand at experiences such as suturing, IV starts and airway management.
| | |
The impact of Skills Day goes beyond a single day of learning. Previous events have received outstanding feedback from students, healthcare professionals and community partners, with many students sharing how much they enjoyed the experience and gained a better understanding of the opportunities available in healthcare. Perhaps most rewarding, we have seen students who participated in Skills Day go on to consider — and pursue — careers in the health profession.
That is exactly why Skills Day matters. By connecting students with real people, real experiences and real career possibilities, we hope to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals to see a future for themselves right here in rural Alberta.
Only 40 spots are available, and past Skills Days have filled quickly. If you know a student who may be interested in exploring the diverse and rewarding career opportunities in healthcare, encourage them to register early!
