A Message from our President:

Margaret Breen

In Washington, we have a unique ecosystem at the crossroads of technology, education, and philanthropy. Investments in this ecosystem have fueled world-changing research for decades. But today we face a sobering reality: sharp reductions in research funding threaten opportunities for the very students who will drive tomorrow’s discoveries.

In response, ARCS Foundation is committed to investing in the next generation of scientists and innovators, now more than ever. With the help of our Long Range Planning committee, ARCS is determining how to remain flexible and responsive to our universities' funding needs during this time.

We thank you for your partnership, which helped ARCS support 150 scholars this year. In addition to investing in scientists, ARCS Seattle is welcoming new members and providing unique opportunities to connect with our community and engage with the scientific research. We hope you will read on and join us to connect, learn and advance science in Washington.

ARCS Alumni Spotlight

Albert Greenberg, PhD

2026 ARCS National Hall of Fame

Dr. Albert G. Greenberg’s pioneering insights and research as a computer scientist created the groundbreaking shift from small, closed, brittle and proprietary networks to the massive, open, highly reliable networks of today, powering Internet backbones, the Cloud, and AI infrastructure.

He has shaped generations of researchers through influential scholarship, patents, and mentorship. Dr. Greenberg was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2016 for his contributions to the theory and practice of operating large carrier and data center networks.

Dr. Greenberg was an ARCS Scholar in 1983 while pursuing his PhD in computer science at the University of Washington. He credits the ARCS award with providing both critical resources and an invaluable boost of confidence at a pivotal point in his career.

“With my ARCS award, I bought the very best modem I could find,” Greenberg recalls. “It allowed me to work faster, stay connected to my research, and ultimately finish my degree sooner, but just as important was the confidence boost. Knowing that someone believed in my potential made a tremendous difference.”

“ARCS Foundation is honored to recognize Dr. Greenberg as our 2026 Hall of Fame Inductee,” says Jill Bray, ARCS Foundation National President. “His career exemplifies the power of sustained investment in fundamental research and in people. His achievements reflect our mission and demonstrate how supporting outstanding young scientists strengthens U.S. innovation and global competitiveness.”

Congratulations to Dr. Albert Greenberg, on behalf of ARCS Seattle Chapter!
