How Can I Help?
What Can I Do?

We need people - MAYBE EVEN YOU -

to fill key volunteer roles!

None of these tasks are difficult

and they don't take up much time,

but they are very important in the life of your church

If you've been thinking about

wanting to do more for your church,

here are some ways you could do just that!

Help with the cooling center from June 30 to July 3

Our cooling center will need bottled water and snacks,
and your donations will be appreciated!

We will also need door shepherds to guide our guests to the right place in our complicated building

Contact Lilly if you can help!

Make music this summer
If you play an instrument or sing,
you can do so during one of our summer worship services!

Please contact Beth Polen

Join our A/V team
If you are already in church on Sunday morning,
why not volunteer one Sunday a month
to help run our audio and visual equipment?
It's not difficult, no experience or technical knowledge is necessary,
and you will be trained on the job!

Please contact Pastor Mary Jo if you are interested

Be a part of Lilly's office squad
We need just
four people to give one or two hours a day,
Tuesdays through Fridays,
to help our amazing Administrator Lilly Brunoni
manage our office and building

Contact Lilly today to sign up!

Become a Sunday caretaker
We need people every Sunday to stay after church
and make sure all of the lights are turned off

and the building is secure

You will also have to stay through
the Sunday afternoon meal in Wesley Hall, usually until about 2 pm

Please contact Ron Leonard
if you can do this even one Sunday a month,

or even one Sunday every two months!

This is From the Archives, where we present something from our extensive collection of archival photos, records and all manner of materials dating back to when the church was First Methodist Episcopal, to First Methodist, to Church of the Savior, to St. Paul's to Crossroads.

It has been pointed out to you, and you will have noticed yourself if you read this part of the Chronicle Weekly on a regular basis, that when our building was constructed in 1883, the entire outside stone edifice was originally quite darker than it appears today.

It didn't help matters that Canton was an industrial town for a long time, so lots of pollution and dirt accumulated over the decades on the already dark stone. And then it also doesn't help that we, in the 21st century, mostly have black and white photos or drawings of our church in that darker color to look at. Those pictures or drawings probably make the stone look darker than people saw it with their own eyes.

Today's pictures are a remarkable find, because they show the time in May of 1965 when all of that changed, and reveal in full color this very brief transitional moment when the church was sandblasted to remove all of that grit and grime, and when the two colors, the old, darker color and the new, lighter one, could be seen on our building at the same time.

Every photo so far that your Chronicle Weekly editor has found of the older, darker color of the church has been only in black and white. It is fascinating to see that darker color now in actual color.

And what a contrast with the new, lighter, sandblasted tone.

In the opinion of your Chronicle Weekly editor, that darker color had a real strength and dignity to it. But it also projected an incredibly imposing visage upon the city around it. The lighter color we are all now used to may be a little less interesting, but it is certainly much more welcoming.
