Resident Spotlight - Meet Carol Henn
|
“I love gardening and the beauty of the outdoors. I live on a “green,” and can look across to other gardens and it is very nice—a true neighborhood.”
|
When Carol Henn decided it was time to downsize and move to an active senior living community, she knew she needed a few things. “I wanted as much natural light as possible and I wanted to enter my apartment from the outdoors, not a hallway, and I hoped for a little garden area in the back.” All her criteria were met when she picked a Garden Cottage home in the fall of 2019.
| | |
|
Originally Henn was slated to move into a one-bedroom apartment in the spring of 2019, but during an impromptu tour to learn more about the community, she discovered there had been a very recent vacancy of a garden apartment. Within an hour of looking at the apartment, she committed. A few weeks later, her house was on the market, and three months later, she was unpacking her bags in her new Garden Cottage home!

Bocce gets rolling for the 2022 season
Bocce is, by most accounts, the most popular on-campus sport. Throughout the spring and summer, it is not uncommon to see 60 or more players and spectators lining the two bocce courts. Bill Moore has been the unofficial leader of the Bocce Advisory Panel since the first court was installed.
While Moore knew nothing about bocce when he first came to our community, he was a quick study and was instrumental in spearheading what is now a competitive and highly desirable spring activity.

Nancy Burke adds new dimension to pastoral care
|
Just over a year ago, Nancy Burke joined our community as the new Pastoral Care Coordinator. It was an immediate great fit, and Burke soon became a trusted face with a compassionate heart to help residents through the ups and downs of life. She is also an excellent facilitator for interested residents looking to work on their spiritual and/or religious journey.
Burke knew early on that working with older adults was where she meshed and felt her calling. After completing a three year program for the laity that focused on theology, pastoral skills, and spiritual development, she combined those skills with her experience as a Pastoral Ministries Coordinator at a nearby CCRC and started her new and very rewarding career path. White Horse Village was the lucky beneficiary of her wealth of knowledge.
A large part of her time each week is spent supporting the residents in Healthcare. “Three times a month I have a worship service for residents living in the three healthcare buildings; Four Seasons, Canterbury, and Bridlewood,” says Burke.“

“Laughter Yoga”
Residents enjoyed some time outdoors channeling their inner peace during “Laughter Yoga,” presented by Master Trainer Alexa Fong Drubay. The low-intensity program was one of our excellent Wellness U classes offered during April. The session featured some stress-reducing stretches, mixed with a healthy dose of humor.
| |
|
Last month more than 30 committees and organizations participated in the 2022 Volunteer Fair, where residents looking to share their time and talents were able to learn more about the opportunities to get involved around the community.
Residents passionate about nature were able to connect with the Landscape Advisory Committee, Harvesters, and the Bluebird Trail program. Sports and recreation enthusiasts enjoy bocce, shuffleboard, or golf. Others can join committees to work with management on community services such as dining, interior design, and healthcare.

Go Purple with a Purpose! Walk to End Alzheimer's on June 14th
Raffles open at 10 am - DJ begins at 10:30 am - Walk starts at 11 am
| |
|
White Horse Village is a bustle of activity and excited chatter about our third community Walk to End Alzheimer's. That chatter brings big smiles to the faces of this year’s tireless Alzheimer’s Walk co-chairs, Bonnie Scott and Duane Thurman, Bonnie was a well-known real estate agent in the area, and Duane was an organic chemist who owned a successful consulting business. And, a special thanks to Mission Enhancement Coordinator Kelli Foley for her support.
Two years ago, as COVID-19 was racing through the world and creating “new normals” in every sector, the Alzheimer’s Association needed to do a fast pivot from their traditional large Philadelphia event. There was no way large masses of people, especially older adults, could safely gather for this time-honored event. The rest is now history — White Horse Village was approached to hold a community walk, and the residents rose to the occasion, raising $26K last year alone!
On June 14th, residents, family, friends, and team members will be pulling out all the stops for the third and the most successful event yet! The theme, Go Purple with a Purpose, resonates with the co-chairs.

Dancing to the beat of a purple drum!
|
The joint will be hopping on June 14th! That is if Malcolm Poindexter III has anything to say about it. For many in the region, Malcolm is the familiar voice they hear on KYW radio delivering the traffic report on weekends. He is also the son of Malcolm Poindexter Jr, the Emmy Award-winning journalist who worked for more than three decades at KYW.
But what makes the son different from the father is what Malcolm III does on his off-air time. He’s a music-spinning DJ known for his upbeat tunes and ability to get everyone out of their chair and bouncing to the beat. That couldn’t be more true for our residents, who last year experienced firsthand the magic of Poindexter’s talents when he joined the White Horse Village Walk to End Alzheimer’s team as guest DJ.

Octofair has never been sweeter!
|
If it’s spring, you can count on one thing, Bryan Roberts is making his famous jams. This former organic chemist has made an art out of creating some of the most mouth-watering flavors of homemade jam to ever grace the tables of lucky shoppers at the Octofair. For the last seven years Roberts has donated thousands of jars of homemade jam to the annual fall event, which is the largest fundraiser for the White Horse Village Residents Association.
Each year, Roberts lovingly dedicates May through October as his jam-making season, traveling to various orchards, stores, and markets to pick out the best fruit, whether fresh or frozen. In some cases, people donate the fruit, like his neighbor’s daughter who brings him fresh figs from her tree. His finished product is always impressive and disappears quickly. In recent years he has enjoyed creating “boozy jams” such as bourbon-peach, kiwi-daiquiri, cranberry-port and strawberry-margarita. “The alcohol gets boiled off, but it has the flavors that come through nicely,” said Roberts.
