Assistance League of Diablo Valley Awards $181,000 in Scholarships
Emotional Support + Financial Support = “We’ve got this!”
Since 1999, Assistance League® of Diablo Valley’s Scholarships program, currently co-chaired by Cindi Segale and Susan Klipfel, has provided financial and emotional support to high school, community college and university students as well as returnees to the academic community. Each applicant has expressed a desire to advance through education by maintaining a designated grade point average, volunteering in campus and community projects and charting an academic timeline.
The interview phase, which gives the Scholarships Committee members invaluable insights as to how these aspiring engineers, oncologists, scientists, and political science teachers have defied overwhelming challenges to realize their dreams occurred via Zoom due to the COVID-19 virus.
During the virtual awards ceremony held on May 12, Scholarships recipients acknowledged the generosity of foundations, individual donors (chapter members included) and revenue earned at the Assistance League Thrift Shop at the Way Side Inn, the chapter’s primary fundraiser located in Lafayette. Their collective message, “…the emotional support matches or exceeds the very much appreciated financial support.” Several recipients shared that they are financing their own education. Receiving a scholarship promises to offset any obstacle that might loom in the future.
Scholarships Committee members look forward to following the additional accomplishments of these remarkable students in the ensuing years.

Cancer Support Community
For more than 30 years, the mission of Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area (CSC) has been to ensure that all people affected by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. We enable cancer patients to manage their treatment and recovery more effectively with their healthcare team, reduce their chances of recurrence, increase their chances for survival, and provide for the highest possible quality of life.
More than 650 walkers gathered virtually across the United States for CSC’s 7th Annual Hope Walk during “Hope Walk Week,” May 9 - 15. It was a tremendous success raising more than $180,000 for CSC’s programs and services.
CSC would like to thank John Muir Health and UCSF Health for becoming our Presenting Sponsors for the third year in a row, our many additional sponsors, and especially our members who walked, ran, swam, and fundraised for us enabling our services to remain free of charge during cancer patients greatest time of need.

We don't know yet how long immunity lasts from the vaccines that we have at hand right now. We're following people who have received vaccinations to find out whether or not their immune response is durable over time and the length of time for which they're protected against disease. So we're really going to have to wait for time to pass to see just how long these vaccines last.

Friends Corner Book Shop
Friends Corner Book Shop has been open only for curbside pickup but we have been hard at work! Shop volunteers have been developing an online inventory of books which will make it easier to know if a specific book is in stock and its location.
We have found that many of our books were significantly underpriced so we have adjusted our pricing to more closely match the value of each book individually; our prices will still be competitive with other booksellers who have a similar set-up. Proceeds of the shop continue to support the collection, programs, and services of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center.
We look forward to reopening for browsing when the time is right. We will communicate as new information is available; keep an eye on our website - https://www.lllcf.org/friends-book-shop - and on social media for updates.

Joaquin Moraga Adobe
The final payment for the Adobe by the Friends of the Joaquin Moraga Adobe (FJMA) to J&J Ranch developers must be made by September 20, 2021. Some of the funds have already been raised thanks to generous individuals and community groups like the Moraga Historical Society, Orinda Community Foundation, Orinda Historical Society, and the Orinda Woman’s Club.
We still need to raise almost $250,000 to make this final payment and complete the purchase and restoration agreement with the J&J Ranch developers.
2020 has been a difficult fundraising year. This year has been unprecedented with all the disruptions, events being cancelled, and ordinary life put on hold. We hope that 2021 brings more normalcy and are looking forward to once again celebrating with music, dance and fun at our annual Fandango.
Our fundraising efforts to make our September 2021 deadline will be focused on individual giving. FJMA has set up a GoFundMe page: click here - please share this widely with friends and family. Look fo rour Adobe yard signs around the Lamorinda area. We are counting on word of mouth to help spread the message to “Save our 1841 Adobe!” Learn more at www.MoragaAdobe.org.

New Lafayette Garden Club Commemorative Cookbook
The Lafayette Garden Club, founded in 1970, conducts annual fund-raising projects to further its goal of community beautification and education. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the group wanted to create something special that would honor its members and be a lasting treasure for family and friends.
The Club decided to create a cookbook that included its members’ favorite recipes with an emphasis on fresh and healthy foods. In addition, the artwork on the cookbook covers and recipe divider pages reflects the work of several of its own floral artists.
It took a village of volunteers to pull this cookbook together during most of 2020 and completely on Zoom! Having sold out the first printing of 450 cookbooks, we have ordered a second printing! To order one or more books (at $20 each) please contact: Tracy Walklet at twalklet@comcast.net.

Lend a Hand to the Lafayette Historical Society
All of us, at some time or another, have probably wandered past the Lafayette Historical Society, located on the ground floor of the Library on Golden Gate Way. And some, during “non-COVID times” may have even visited the Society’s archives and history room and learned something they didn’t know about Lafayette’s past.
And who knew that the Society also maintains operates the City’s very first fire engine? Old Betsy as she is known, is a 1919 Model TT Fire Engine. Yes, that’s Old Betsy in the Library’s parking garage window.
The Society raises operating funds by a combination of its membership dues, newsletter sponsorships, book sales, the not-to-be-miss “Breakfast with Santa” event, and through the popular “Speaker Series.” Due to the COVID pandemic, the Society’s history room has been closed and the Speaker Series canceled. It also appears that the “Breakfast with Santa” will also have to be postponed this year. All that is our way of saying that the Society really could use the community’s help right now. If you have a chance, take a look around the Society’s Website where you can listen to a collection of oral histories from many notables Lafayettans, including Bill Eames, Larry Blodgett, Ed Stokes, Steve Falk, Jon Frank, and Jack Marchant. And, if there’s anybody who knows how to work on a Model T, or knows how to drive one, the Society could sure use your help with Old Betsy. Visit the Society’s membership page now to find out how you can become an active member of this esteemed local gem. You can also call (925) 283-1848, or email Mary McCosker, LHS’s President, at lafayette.history@comcast.net.

Join Sustainable Lafayette on Thursday, June 17 at 7 p.m. for an online community gathering exploring the challenges and solutions of restaurant takeout.

- Do some of your favorite restaurants offer compostable solutions? Do tell!

White Pony Express - All of us taking care of all of us!
Did you know that in just seven years White Pony Express (WPE) has eliminated more than 210 tons of carbon dioxide from the air you breathe? When you support WPE, you take action to ensure a healthier you and a safer community.
Our story begins when good food is thrown away. When food is tossed in the trash, it ends up rotting in a landfill. As it decomposes, it produces huge amounts of methane — a greenhouse gas at least 28 times as potent as carbon dioxide. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, “At least 25% of today's warming is driven by methane from human actions.”
The 17 million pounds of fresh, nutritious food WPE has rescued has not only produced 13.5 million meals for our neighbors in need, it has also reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 420,000 pounds.
Please consider donating to the White Pony Express Spring Campaign through our website https://www.whiteponyexpress.org/spring-2021. Our environmental impact story is compelling – and our model is ready to scale! We also have angel donors who will match your contribution dollar-for-dollar!

Connect with the City of Lafayette
The City of Lafayette is urging everyone to sign-up for the latest information for Lafayette residents and businesses.
What Should be the mission of the City of Lafayette?
The City of Lafayette is conducting a survey of people that live and work in Lafayette to find out what you believe should be the vision of our city in the future. The General Plan Advisory Council (GPAC) is conducting this survey and the results will help guide the GPAC in suggesting a new vision of the city to the Lafayette City Council. Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey and have a voice in our future.
