No Thursday Morning Meeting This Week

The regular Thursday morning meeting this week (October 2) at the Saugatuck Congregational Church has been cancelled in observance of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. The next Y's Men regular meeting will be Thursday, October 9 when Bill Harmer, Executive Director of The Westport Library, will be the featured speaker.

Y's Man William Weiss in Iceland.

Travel Discussion Group Focuses on Y's Men in Iceland

The Y’s Men Travel Discussion Group will meet from 9:00 to 10:30 am on Monday, September 29, in room 203-204 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church.

Meetings begin by members talking about their recent travel experiences.

The topic of this meeting:

A Special Guest Presentation by Y's Man William Weiss on “A Y’s Men Expedition”

William's preamble to his presentation:

At the end of last June, three Y’s Men (me, Julio Perez Fontan, and Alan Jones) and a friend of Alan's embarked on a four day, 55 km Icelandic hiking expedition through the high volcanic wilderness - from the Island’s center south down to the coast. The gripping story of this journey, replete with tales of sumptuous gourmet meals and ultra luxury accommodations will be told as a visual presentation at the Y’s Men Travel Discussion Group meeting on Monday, September 29.

I will present spectacular visual theatre with photography and video by both me and Julio. From fewer than 25,000 curated images, I will endeavor to avoid being as boring and repetitive as possible, while expounding with riveting information about Iceland in general and its people in particular. I suggest that members delusional enough to attend this meeting, should bring a soft pillow and perhaps a headrest so as to encounter the least discomfort while napping during my talk. Extension cords will be provided for portable CPAP machines and antidepressants will be distributed.

Do not let our heroic exploits diminish or degrade your manhoods - you were with us in spirit…

Spouses/partners/significant others are always welcome.

Y's Man Allen Swerdlowe (right) interviews CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg at a special event at The Westport Library Thursday evening.

Last Thursday evening the Y's Men Travel Discussion Group and The Westport Library welcomed internationally known travel guru Peter Greenberg to present his highly respected insights about traveling and the travel business. A captivated audience of more than 250 enjoyed a thorough look into the travel experience, as Greenberg shared the understanding he gained through 50 years covering travel for major networks and news organizations. Joined by good friend, Y's Man and fellow traveler Allen Swerdlowe, many questions were asked and answered.

Attending was a most valuable investment of time because everybody left with far more knowledge and understanding about safer travel and getting the most out of their travel dollar.

Andrew Wilk at Classical Music Society October 7

Andrew Wilk

A number of years ago the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center performed at Shaker Village in Pleasant Hill, Kentucky and the concert was aired on the PBS "Live From Lincoln Center" television series. On Tuesday, October 7, from 2:45 to 4:15 pm at the Westport Center for Senior Activities, the Y's Men Classical Music Society will be viewing portions of that video entitled "Simple Gifts."

Guiding attendees through the video will be Andrew Wilk, a five-time Emmy award winner recognized for his decades of work in television, and former executive producer of "Live from Lincoln Center." He will be interviewed by John Brandt on how the "Simple Gifts" remote production came about, some of the challenges they faced, how he staged it and, more generally, how music is effectively captured on TV.

Because of limited seating at the Senior Center, reservations are required. Please reserve a seat through Y's Man Ed Bloch at edbloch71@gmail.com.

Y's Men Jazz Club Lunch Set for Wednesday, October 8

The next Y's Men Jazz Lunch will be at the Westport VFW at noon on Wednesday, October 8. This date returns the Jazz Lunch to its regular second Wednesday of the month schedule.

The program will highlight the artistic variety of pianos in jazz history. Attendees will hear a jazz version of classical music, a jazz legend who couldn't read a note of music, a big band leader playing solo piano, an organist, a local legend...and more. There will be a verbal biographical sketch before each performance.

The lunch will again be catered by Calise's.

If you plan to attend, contact Jeff Hare by email at jeffahare@gmail.com. Y's Men guests are welcome but be sure to give Jeff their names.

Y's Men Caps will be available for $15.00 and Windbreakers for $40.00 on an ongoing basis. For additional information contact Y's Man Stephen Bentkover at sgb214@sbcglobal.net or see him at the Thursday morning meetings when the apparel is on display.

Non-Fiction Book Club Meets October 15

The Y's Men Non-Fiction Book Club will be discussing "Who is Government" by Michael Lewis when it meets on Wednesday, October 15 at 2:00 pm in room 109 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church.

Save the dates for two Club meetings in December. The first will be on Wednesday, December 10, and the second a week later on Wednesday, December 17.

The December 10 meeting will be a discussion of "Apollo 13" by James Lovell which was previously announced for an earlier date. On December 17, the Club will discuss "American Rascal," a biography of Jay Gould by Greg Steinmetz. The meeting will be held at Lyndhurst, Jay Gould's estate in Tarrytown, NY, and author Steinmetz will attend. There may be a modest cost to attend so the Club may be asking for an intention to attend by the end of October. Stay tuned for details.

For additional information, contact Y's Man Jeff Schwartz at jandjschwartz@gmail.com or 201-787-0654.

Y's Men Current Events Discussion Group Meets Weekly

A small group of Y's men meet weekly to discuss topics of mutual interest inspired by current events. That's the Y's Men Current Events Discussion Group.

There are two separate groups that meet on Wednesdays and Fridays at the Saugatuck Congregational Church at 10:00 am for an hour-long discussion.

The topic for discussion is selected by consensus at the previous meeting. Each of the two separate groups is limited to seven members so everyone attending can actively participate in the discussion. An additional Monday group may be added should there be sufficient demand.

Anyone interested in learning more about the Current Events Group or in joining it should contact Y's Man Tony Pranzo at tpranzo@yahoo.com.
