Because of my line of work ive been blessed to become friendly or friends with some really super talented people. One of the mostest is Elizabeth Bougerol: I adore this woman.

sdTELL ME WHAT YOU THINK

Elizabeth Bougerol, vocalist and creative force behind The Hot Sardines—one of the great modern-day jazz ensembles—will release her self-titled solo debut album on October 16 on Just Lucky Records. “I've made a lot of music, but I don't think I've ever made anything this cinematic,” says Bougerol, who has long played the role of cultural historian in the Sardines. “Every song here starts with a mood and a story, a scene I could see before I could hear it. If the Hot Sardines bring the party, I hope this record is what you put on afterward, when the night is quiet and you want to stay inside the feeling a little longer.”

From Nightlife to Hospitality: Daniel Nardicio’s Casa Oasis echoes the Ian Schrager Playbook

With Casa Oasis in Zipolite, Mexico, nightlife impresario Daniel Nardicio brings his instinct for people, parties and cultural chemistry into hospitality — following a path pioneered by Ian Schrager.

ZIPOLITE, OAXACA, MEXICO

Before Ian Schrager became one of the most influential figures in modern hospitality, he was a nightlife impresario.

Schrager and Steve Rubell created Studio 54, the legendary New York nightclub that understood something fundamental: a great room isn't defined by what's inside it. It's defined by who comes through the door, what happens once they're there, and how being there makes them feel.

When Schrager moved into hotels, he brought that philosophy with him. Beginning with Morgans Hotel in New York in 1984, he helped pioneer the boutique-hotel movement, replacing the anonymity and standardization of traditional hotels with personality, design, social energy and a sense that the hotel itself could be the destination.

Now Daniel Nardicio is making his own leap from nightlife into hospitality with Casa Oasis in Zipolite, Mexico.

The circumstances are different. The scale is different. And Zipolite is emphatically not Manhattan.

But the underlying idea is strikingly similar.

Nightlife teaches you that the real product is chemistry.

For years, Nardicio has built his reputation by creating parties, performances and happenings around an instinct for bringing the right people together. Casa Oasis takes that sensibility out of the nightclub and gives it a permanent home on Mexico's Pacific coast.

Located in Zipolite, Oaxaca, the famously free-spirited beach town, Casa Oasis is conceived as something more personal than a conventional hotel. It is a place to stay, certainly — but also somewhere to meet people, gather around the pool, disappear for an afternoon, make friends, flirt, relax and become part of a community.

The hotel's own structure reflects that social approach: Casa Oasis incorporates communal areas and a pool into the experience rather than treating guests as occupants of isolated rooms.

And Zipolite is an especially fitting place for Nardicio's second act.

Long associated with freedom, nudism, queer travelers, artists, bohemians and people seeking an alternative to polished corporate resort culture, Zipolite already possesses something hotel companies spend millions trying to manufacture:

a personality.

Casa Oasis isn't trying to sand down that personality. It's building around it.

That, perhaps, is where the comparison with Schrager becomes most revealing.

Schrager didn't succeed in hospitality by forgetting everything he knew about nightlife. He succeeded because he applied it.

Nightlife had taught him about entrances and anticipation, lighting and atmosphere, public versus private space, exclusivity and openness, and above all the unpredictable alchemy created when interesting people occupy the same room.

Nardicio comes to Casa Oasis with his own version of that education.

"I've never been interested in just putting people in a room," said Daniel Nardicio. "I've always been interested in what happens when you put the right people in the same place. Casa Oasis is really an extension of that. It's hospitality, but it's also community, personality and a little bit of mischief."

For Nardicio, Casa Oasis also represents an evolution rather than a reinvention.

A promoter asks: Who should be here tonight?

A hotelier asks: Why will someone want to come back?

The best of both understand that the answer isn't simply the building.

It's the feeling.

Ian Schrager helped prove that someone from nightlife could look at the traditions of the hotel business from the outside and see possibilities established hoteliers had overlooked.

With Casa Oasis, Daniel Nardicio is making a similar wager from a very different stretch of coastline.

New York gave Nardicio the nightlife. Zipolite gives him the oasis.

And if Schrager's career demonstrated that nightlife could become hospitality, Casa Oasis offers a distinctly Nardicio variation on the idea:

The party doesn't have to end.

Sometimes it just checks in.
