Budget town hall meeting on March 16 2026

March 4, 2026

Neighbors,

Fairfax County began its annual budget process when the county executive presented his proposed FY 2027 budget last month.

His proposal is just the first step in the process before the Board of Supervisors ultimately adopts the budget. Now, I want to hear from you on your priorities for the budget.

I will hold two town hall meetings to get your feedback — one virtual and one in person. I hope you can attend and participate:

  • March 12 at 7 p.m.: Join this virtual meeting on Microsoft Teams using this link. (Meeting ID: 238 505 482 254 79; Passcode: aQ6GC7oi) Or, participate by phone at 571-429-5982 (Conference ID: 113 430 076#).
  • March 16 at 7 p.m.: Attend this in-person meeting at Louise Archer Elementary School, 324 Nutley Street, NW, Vienna. I’ll be joined by Hunter Mill District School Board Member Melanie Meren, and this meeting will also be live streamed on my Facebook page.

These are other steps in the budget process:

  • March 17: The maximum FY 2027 tax rates are advertised.
  • April 14-16: Board of Supervisors holds public hearings on the proposed budget.
  • April 28: Board of Supervisors marks up the budget.
  • May 5: Board of Supervisors adopts the FY 2027 budget.

While I invite you to attend my budget town halls, you’re also welcome to tell me what you think by emailing my office or calling 703-478-0283, TTY 711.

Regards,

Walter

Early Voting Begins Friday on a Constitutional Amendment to Redraw Virginia’s 11 Congressional Districts

What’s happening: Early voting begins this Friday, March 6 for a proposed state constitutional amendment to allow the Virginia General Assembly to redraw our congressional maps.

If the amendment is approved, the legislature would be permitted to temporarily redraw the state’s 11 congressional districts before the November midterm elections. However, the state would resume its normal redistricting process after the 2030 Census, returning map-drawing powers to a bipartisan commission.

The ballot question reads:

“Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia's standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?”

Under the proposed congressional map which was adopted as part of the state’s budget, most of Reston and Vienna would remain in the 11th Congressional District which Congressman James Walkinshaw currently represents. Several precincts in Hunter Mill are proposed to move to the 10th Congressional District, specifically Stuart, McNair, Frying Pan, Floris, Fox Mill 1 and Fox Mill 2.

Where to vote: Vote early in person at these locations and hours from this Friday, March 6, to Saturday, April 18:

  • North County Governmental Center (across from the Reston Library)

Monday to Friday: 1 - 7 p.m.

Saturdays: April 11 and 18, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

  • Fairfax County Government Center, Room 251

Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Saturdays: April 11 and 18, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

An additional 14 early voting locations will open starting on Saturday, April 11.

All registered Fairfax County voters are eligible to participate in this election. Election Day is Tuesday, April 21.

Voting by mail: The deadline to apply for a mail ballot is Friday, April 10. Completed mail ballots must be returned by noon on Friday, April 24 to be counted.

Redistricting background: Under Virginia’s Constitution, congressional (and state legislative) districts are currently drawn by a 16-member bipartisan commission. In 2020, voters passed a constitutional amendment — Question 1 — that gave this responsibility to this commission. In February, however, the governor approved a proposed constitutional amendment (HB 1384) to temporarily give this power to the legislature until after the 2030 Census.

Fairfax County proclamation for the Peace Corps 65th anniversary

Board of Supervisors Update

The Board of Supervisors met yesterday March 3. You can watch the meeting and review the agenda and package.

Recognizing the 65th Anniversary of the Peace Corps

What’s happening: Yesterday, the Board recognized the 65th anniversary of the Peace Corps and the many Peace Corps alumni who live in Fairfax County, including the Hunter Mill District. We presented a proclamation to members of the Northern Virginia Returned Peace Corps Volunteers.

Why it matters: While the Peace Corps was founded to promote peace and friendship abroad through volunteer service, the agency’s alumni also provide a “domestic dividend” when they return to the U.S.

The National Peace Corps Association’s 2023 survey found that 86% of returned members continue to volunteer in their local communities, and they’re three times more likely to volunteer than the average American. The study conservatively calculated the economic impact of these volunteer hours at $1 million annually.

Many returned volunteers also bring their skills in health care and public health back home, continuing in careers in these fields. At the time of the study, nearly 25% had started businesses, contributing over $1 billion to the economy.

Join today: As the returned volunteers encouraged us yesterday, it’s never too late to serve in the Peace Corps. There’s no maximum age limit to join, and people in their 60s, 70s, and 80s have served successfully, according to the agency. Retirees and even couples can serve.

To celebrate its 65th anniversary, the Peace Corps has set an ambitious goal of having 8,000 volunteers in service by 2030 — more than double the number today. You’ll work with communities abroad to help address real needs through agriculture, community economic development, education, environment, and youth in development projects. Apply today.

Watch for Children traffic sign

“Watch for Children Sign” Approved for John Milton Drive

What’s happening: The Board approved a “Watch for Children” sign on John Milton Drive near Fox Mill Elementary School in Herndon. I requested the Board to authorize this sign based on requests from the community.

Why it matters: These signs can help drivers to remember to slow down and drive more cautiously as they pass through residential neighborhoods with lots of children.

Background: These signs are one of the tools used by the Residential Traffic Administration Program. This county program aims to help neighborhoods to deal with traffic impacts and improve safety.

Under the program, “Watch for Children” signs may be placed near the primary entrance to residential neighborhoods or locations with an extremely high concentration of children, such as playgrounds, daycares or community centers, and other areas of concern.

If you’re interested in a sign or other measures to help deal with traffic in your neighborhood, contact Shyamali Hauth in my office by email or call 703-478-0283, TTY 711.

Tell me more: The county’s Department of Transportation has developed a preliminary list of potential active transportation projects for funding, such as crosswalk improvements and new sidewalks. The Board approved $25.43 million in funding for these projects across all of Fairfax County last fall.

In 2021, the Board of Supervisors set an overall goal to invest $100 million for pedestrian and biking improvements throughout the county by 2027. Since then, the Board has committed $82.12 million in total for projects so far, and the remaining $17.88 million is expected to be allocated by 2027.

A Northern Virginia Senior Softball player

Play Ball with Northern Virginia Senior Softball. Sign Up Now for the Spring Season

What’s happening: Are you seeking a fun, sporty activity or want to reconnect with your love of slow-pitch softball? Look no further than Northern Virginia Senior Softball, the largest organized senior softball league in Northern Virginia. The group is recruiting new players now for its upcoming spring season that begins mid-April.

Who can play? This co-ed league is for men over 50 and women over 40. There are no try-outs to join, but prospective players must possess a minimal level of softball fundamentals that will be determined through an assessment.

NVSS offers three conferences for players of all skill levels, and the league forms new teams each year. This means you’ll meet new people and players and make new friendships.

Spring season: The spring season starts in mid-April and runs through July. Doubleheader games are played every Tuesday and Thursday mornings at several parks throughout Fairfax County. There’s also a separate fall season that runs from September through October. Both seasons offer an end of season tournament.

More info: Contact Artie Negrin at 336-596-6960 or by email. Or visit the league’s website to learn more or to sign up to play.

Nutley Street Culvert Replacement

To help alleviate drainage issues in Southwest Vienna, the town is replacing an underground culvert along Nutley Street near Marshall Road. The project is expected to take nearly a year to complete.

The project’s first phase involves temporarily removing the center median at the southwest entrance to town, resulting in the closure of one northbound lane of Nutley Street SW.

Work will generally occur on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — but lane closures will be in place for the duration of the project, including before and after work hours. Learn more.
