HIKES

Thu., Jan. 18. RE-SCHEDULED - Fenton-Ruby Park, Willington, (B3C) Moderate. Tyna has CANCELLED her hike for Tuesday, 1/16, due to predicted snow. She has RE-SCHEDULED it for Thursday, 1/18. 6.5 miles on 4 loop trails plus the Langhammer trail in Ashford that connects to Fenton-Ruby. The hike will circle Taylor Pond, pass two house foundations, many stone walls and include a section of the "Old Connecticut Path." Several moderate hills and muddy spots. Bring traction devices in case of icy conditions. Meet at 9:45 for 10 am start. Refreshment afterwards at Willington Pizza for those interested. DIRECTIONS: For GPS, put in Fenton Ruby Park or Burma Road, Willington: Otherwise: From I-84 take exit 69 for Rte. 74 east. Go 4.2 miles and turn left on Moose Meadow Road. Go 1.8 miles to Fenton-Ruby Park (Burma Road) on the right. From the south take either Rte. 89 or 198 north to Rte. 44, take a left on Rte. 44 then a right on Rte. 74. Go 3.8 miles and take right on Moose Meadow Road. Go 1.8 miles to Fenton-Ruby (Burma Road) on right. L Tyna Waller (860-450-6114, altina.waller@sbcglobal.net)

Thu., Jan. 18. CANCELLED/REPLACED - Tunxis Trail, northern section to Massachusetts, Hartland, (Moderate/Strenuous). Maite has CANCELLED her following hike due to unsafe parking area (high packed snow/ice) and high water at the stream crossings. She has REPLACED it with a new hike at People's State Forest. Registration is required for this activity by emailing the trip leader. Anyone who has not previously hiked on trip leader's hikes which required preregistration should provide information about their recent comparable prior hiking experience. Depending on the weather and trail conditions, this will be a 6-7 mile hike. We will do the northernmost section of the Tunxis Trail up to the Massachusetts marker and beyond to the end of the trail at Pell Road. We may also include the section of Tunxis between Walnut Hill Road and Rte. 20 (a short car spot will be necessary in that event). There are stream crossings and some short steep rocky climbs and descents. The terrain gets more difficult as we approach the Massachusetts border. Hike will be limited to 10 hikers. Time and meeting location will be emailed a few days before the trip to registered hikers. L Maite Barainca (baraferr@comcast.net)

Thu., Jan. 18. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, South Salem, NY, Moderate. We will hike approximately 5 miles (there are a few places to shorten the hike if we need to) over moderate terrain.  There are two uphill sections with a total elevation gain of around 550 ft.  We will walk along a good portion of Cross River which in winter can be amazing.  I expect to walk between 2 and 2.5 mph.  I expect it will be cold so I am not planning on any substantial stop.  Separation breaks, wardrobe and water breaks as needed. Waterproof boots are highly recommended on this hike.  Also microspikes may be required, decision at day of hike. Meet at the parking lot / picnic area on the left just after the main road crosses the river (Parking Here:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/kh527GnwdFobKa4z5) at 9:30 for a prompt 9:45 start.  Route:  https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/wpr-4-9-miles-535-ft-613690c?u=i&sh=hxy2kc. L Conio Sessa (203-219-4731, csessa5@gmail.com)

Thu., Jan. 18. Peoples State Forest, Barkhamsted, Moderate. 5-6 miles at Peoples State Forest in Barkhamsted at discretion of trip leader based on new snowfall and conditions. REGISTRATION REQUIED for this activity by e-mailing the trip leader. The exact loop will depend on how much snow we get. I checked parts of the People's trails on Monday and they are mainly snow free with occasional patches of ice. Keep in mind that new snow will cover these icy spots and they'll be harder to spot. I plan to avoid the boulders leading to Chaugum's Lookout and Grand Vista. Hiking boots, layers, sufficient water and snacks/lunch are necessary. Hikers are required to carry microspikes. Details of meeting place and time will be emailed to those who have been registered. L Maite Barainca (baraferr@comcast.net)

NEEDLESS TO SAY, THIS CAN END A POOL SESSION SERIES PERMANENTLY. SO PLEASE DO YOUR PART TO KEEP US CLEAN!   BELOW IS A RECOMMENDED GUIDE FOR CLEANING YOUR BOAT BEFORE GOING TO ANY POOL SESSION. 1. Remove all airbags, removable outfitting (hip block wedges etc.) Strip the boat as well as practical. 2. If outside water is available, hose off exterior and interior. 3. Spray a generous amount of "Simple Green" inside and out. (A natural, non-toxic product and excellent algaecide) Let sit a bit, Scrub where you can, then hose out thoroughly. (Bleach is an alternative but be careful not to use in strong concentration, as is will damage some outfitting and irritate skin.) 4. If you cannot clean your boat outside, its recommended that you simply spray the simple Green liberally in boat, add a couple gallons of water to boat. Slosh around the best you can and drain outside. 5. IF YOU TAKE YOUR BOAT ON THE RIVER BETWEEN SESSIONS YOU SHOULD REPEAT THIS PROCESS. 6. You may want to consider having a dedicated pool boat. ALL BOATS WILL BE INSPECTED AND IF NOT, CLEAN IT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN. Club boats will be available to loan for the session. ALGAE CONTAMINATION OF KAYAKS IS BECOMING A SERIOUS ISSUE AT POOL SESSIONS. ALGAE CONTAMINATION CAN REQUIRE COMPLETE EMPTYING OF A POOL TO DISINFECT!
