COLUMBUS (June 29, 2023) — The Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies (OACAA), and the Strategic Research Group (SRG), will release the 2023 State of Poverty in Ohio Report on Monday, July 10, 2023, at The Ohio Statehouse Ladies Gallery. The press conference will begin at 2:00 p.m.

The annual report researches and presents issues impacting low-income households to shed light on the effects of poverty in Ohio. The straightforward narrative, backed by credible data and coupled with easy-to-understand graphics, demonstrates current barriers impacting families across the state. This year’s report explores pandemic learning loss, mental health access, and public and private transportation access. Also included is an update from last year’s report regarding Ohio’s financial support for higher education.

“Causes and conditions of poverty are many times unique for each person and family experiencing them, though larger themes and policies across the state can creates barriers on roads to self-sufficiency,” said OACAA Executive Director Philip E. Cole. “State support and access to education, mental health, and transportation are significantly below the national average. Reduced access impacts our neighbors’ ability to secure higher paying jobs and reach their fullest potential.”

During the press conference, Cole and Tina Kassebaum, partner and principal investigator of SRG, will highlight the report’s findings, discuss the methodology, and answer questions. Copies of the report will be available at the press conference and online at www.oacaa.org immediately following.
