NACOK Resources, News, & Updates

October/November 2026 | Issue #8

Hey neighbor!

It's hard to believe October is already here! As the weather hopefully cools off and the leaves change, this is a great time to pause, take a breath, and think about the great work you've done this year so far, especially as you rest from the summer season.

This issue continues our mission of "creating safe, healthy, and attractive neighborhoods for all." Inside, you'll find updates from city departments and community partners, along with a few tips and tricks from other neighborhoods doing great work! Strong neighborhoods start with informed and engaged neighbors. Thanks for all the work you're doing in your communities! You're making a difference with every block, project, and conversation you have.

This year is especially meaningful for us at Neighborhood Alliance of Central Oklahoma as we celebrate 50 years of building stronger neighborhoods across our community. For five decades, neighbors have been at the heart of what we do—and that hasn’t changed.

DONATE TO NACOK

Neighborhood Alliance needs your help to keep serving your community! For the past 50 years, our non-profit has worked to ensure safe, healthy, and attractive communities for all are able to exist. Your contribution to NACOK will support:

Has it been a while since we've talked? Are you no longer on your neighborhood board, but you know who is? We'd love to know more about how things are going! Updating your neighborhood information after elections or throughout the year allows us to help keep you informed about activities, rezoning matters, crime stats, and better serve your neighborhood.

Free Smoke Alarms Available for OKC Homeowners

With cooler weather on the way, it's always a good idea to consider the importance of smoke alarms! According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly half of all home heating fires happen between December and February.

Additionally, most fire deaths occur in residential structures, with the majority of those deaths happening at night when people are sleeping. The smoke, not the flame itself, is usually what causes people to die. Having working smoke alarms in your home provides at least a 50% greater chance of surviving a residential structure fire.

The OKC Fire Department will come to any residential property owners home and install smoke alarms in proper locations. Landlords and property managers are responsible for ensuring working smoking alarms are provided in their investment properties.

Reporting Short Term Rentals

OKC has contracted with Deckard Technologies as a system to manage short term-rental/home share compliance as well as an online complaint form and hotline that will be answered by Deckard call center staff 24/7.

For complaints such as noise violations or parking complaints, call center staff will reach out directly to property manager to address the issue with their guest in real-time. Complaints regarding permit compliance can be submitted to Deckard but enforcement will remain with the City's Code Enforcement team.

The form and hotline are now live and available at okc.gov/str or 405-543-1667.

Code Enforcement Corner

Fall is finally here, bringing cool days and colder nights. To stay warm, both people and wildlife may seek shelter in abandoned or empty buildings, but this can be dangerous. They can become trapped or injured with no one to help.

Report dilapidated structures—those with foundation damage, collapsing roofs, or major structural decay—to the Action Center by calling 405-297-2535, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Unsecured buildings, like those with broken windows, open doors, or holes in the roof or walls, should also be reported.

Additionally, reports can be filed by texting (405) 252-1053 or emailing action.center@okc.gov; photos of code violations can be sent in either of these methods.

By being proactive, we can help ensure our community stays safe for both people and pets.

Code Enforcement is happy to attend any neighborhood association meetings. If this is something you would like, please contact Code Enforcement at 405-297-2317.

TRICK OR TREAT SAFETY TIPS

Visit OKC's Hazardous Waste Swap Shop

Did you know OKC Hazardous Waste has a swap shop?

Located at Hazardous Waster Center at 1621 S Portland is a great way to help protect the environment through reusing already opened lawn chemicals pesticides, herbicides, paints and stains, drain cleaner, pool chemicals, bug spray motor fuels, or other household chemicals. You can go by anytime between Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 am to 4:45 pm.

The room where the swap shop is located allows residents with a water bill to bring in items and take up to 10 items home with them each week. All product found in the swap shop has been brought in by people using the hazardous waste drop off. If the product was still usable, it is placed in the room after staff sorts through drop off items.
