Associate Artist Alcove:

Cheryl Knowles Harrigan & Rita Michalenko

By Rita Michalenko

There will be a duet exhibition at Riverfront Renaissance Center (RRCA) in Millville with professors/painters Rita Michalenko and Cheryl Knowles-Harrigan. Rita and Cheryl started painting and teaching together when Cheryl was hired part-time in 1992. Rita had been with the college prior to Cheryl teaching ceramics, fundamental, upper-level, and General Education art classes. They have traveled on painting trips to Anguilla, Maine, and Pennsylvania, as well as painting plein air locally. They are full professors who enjoy their students, work, and friendship.

Our Just the Two of Us petite feature exhibition is in RRCA's Associate Artist's Alcove: 22 North High Street, Millville NJ, adjacent to the main gallery. We invite students, colleagues, friends, and artists to join us in celebrating 30 years of kinship, traveling, and teaching. (Yes, we have known each other for over 3 decades.) Rita and Cheryl are both Associate level artists at the Riverfront Renaissance Center and also members of Strobe Southern NJ Visual Arts Collective, and exhibit at many of the same local galleries throughout the South Jersey and Philadelphia area. Rita and Cheryl teach credit and personal enrichment courses and continue to take art workshops. Each artist will be showing a cross-section of paintings and sketchbooks.

A Gothic Romance

Inspired by Victorian & Romantic Era Poets with a few twists: Luke Havergal……

“There is the western gate, Luke Havergal,

There are the crimson leaves upon the wall.

Go, for the winds are tearing them away,—

Nor think to riddle the dead words they say,

Nor any more to feel them as they fall;

But go, and if you trust her she will call.

There is the western gate, Luke Havergal—

THE MILLVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY DISPLAYS NEW PHOTO

EXHIBIT DURING SEPTEMBER’S THIRD FRIDAY

Millville, N.J. - Make this a “September to Remember” and visit two historic treasures in the City of Millville during Millville’s Third Friday on September 20, 2024, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. A new photographic essay of Millville’s free public educational facilities entitled “School Days: When We Were Just a Couple of Kids” will be on display at the 1857 Millville Bank, the City’s first bank, now the Genealogical and Historical Library of the Millville Historical Society located at 200 East Main Street. Covering over twenty-five schools, this photo exhibit begins with Central School, Millville’s first free public school constructed in 1849 on the corner of Third and Sassafras Streets and continues through the opening of the new Millville High School on Wade Boulevard on September 23, 2023. The display includes information, vintage photographs, and memorabilia from various Millville schools. Many of these educational facilities have been demolished or repurposed.

Also, open for the evening is the circa 1798 Baracha Dunn House, the oldest surviving building in downtown Millville, located at 204 East Main Street. This historic structure just received a fresh coat of paint and repairs were made to some of its exterior structure. The interior is furnished with period pieces that reflect the era. Tours guides will share with you the fascinating story of the house’s first owner, Baracha Dunn, and the history of the Dunn House through its 226 years of existence. Additionally, Kathryn

Saxton-Granato, a program specialist with South Jersey Curations, LLC will be preparing seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs for drying.

The 1798 Baracha Dunn House is listed on the Register of Historic Structures and Sites in Cumberland County. Built in 1857 the Millville Bank is listed on both the National and State Registers of Historic Places.
