The Alabama Forestry Association and the Alabama Loggers Council work for YOU, serving as the voice of forestry.

As the Alabama Legislature convenes today for the 2025 General Session, AFA has worked to introduce legislation aimed at improving our supply chain operations. This legislation focuses on three key objectives (see links to the draft legislation and fact sheet below):

  1. Promotes safety by limiting the number of trucks that can be weighed at once on portable DOT/ALEA scales (currently no limit).
  2. Enhances supply chain efficiency by increasing single and tandem axle weights to 22,000# and 44,000# (plus 10% tolerance), respectively.
  3. Streamlines the appeals process for citations, reducing the need to go to court.

We expect the bill to be introduced this week, with Senator Jack Williams managing the legislation in the Senate and Representative Donna Givens in the House. We have asked that the bill be referred to the Agriculture & Forestry Committees in both the Senate & the House. We will share the bill numbers once available.

ONE MORE THING...

There may be opposition to the axle weight increase, it's important to note this proposed legislation does not raise the truck’s gross weight limit. Instead, it allows for more efficient and legal truck loading, improving hauling economics. We expect that opponents will call for a public hearing. We need strong industry representation to speak on behalf of the bill.

If you're interested in attending or speaking in support of the bill, please let us know. Your voice matters!
