Town of Bedford
April 14, 2022
TOWN OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED ON
FRIDAY, APRIL 15. TOWN OFFICES WILL REOPEN ON MONDAY, APRIL 18 AT 8:30 AM.

Enjoy the Holiday weekend!
From the Supervisor
Dear Bedford,

Heading into the weekend, I want to wish a blessed holiday to all those who observe.

Today I attended a meeting with leaders from several Bedford organizations and am just so inspired. Coming out of two difficult years, I see them bursting with renewed vigor fed by their leadership, volunteers, supporters, and participants (our community!). Our local nonprofit organizations and institutions provide so much of what we love about Bedford - from art and nature to enjoy and history to learn, to opportunities to take action to have a healthy, safe, inclusive, and sustainable town. I am thrilled to see all the ways they partner with one another and how we can all work together. See below for info about events of some of these organizations and remember to support our nonprofits. I will be working on reviving the town’s community organization guide to provide information to residents about all the ways to be involved with local organizations.

The next Town Board meeting will be on Tuesday, April 19th with presentations by and a celebration of Town committees. Everyone who serves on a board, commission, or committee of the Town is invited to join the Town Board and Town department heads from 5:30pm - 7:00pm at the Town House (note venue change from original invite). Anyone may also join the meeting virtually via Zoom (but we have not yet figured out how to share the cake with you that way). The Town Board business will be conducted after the party and will include repeal of the old leaf blower law and an update from CityScape about the results of the wireless communication survey.

Please pay taxes before April 30 to avoid penalties, and remember that Town offices will be closed tomorrow, Friday, April 15.

As always, please reach out if you have concerns or want to connect. I am happy to hear from you.

Be well,

Ellen

Westwood Open for Yard Waste and Free Mulch Sat.
The yard waste recycling facility on Beaver Dam Rd is open daily 7AM - 3:30PM and will be open on Saturday for residents to bring yard debris and pick up free mulch and compost from 10AM-2PM

A new screen has been installed on the grinder to keep dust from blowing toward the dog park and trees will be planted between the dog park and the facility this spring.
Water Switch April 18-25
From April 18-25 you may notice a change in the taste or smell of your water if you are in the Bedford Hills/Katonah Consolidated Water District. For one week we will be treating water from local sources, so we expect that taste and odor will be different from what we are used to from the normal supply. This temporary shift to alternative water supply is in preparation for the planned October 2022 - May 2023 shutdown necessary for DEP to make critical infrastructure repairs.
Reduce Energy Waste - with Bob!
The Town of Bedford is committed to an 80% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 and buildings account for 50% of these emissions in Bedford. The more we can reduce energy waste from buildings, the closer we are to meeting our goal. Not only that, with energy efficiency, you can save money and be more comfortable in your home.

The Energy Coach Challenge will help you make a plan to save energy. Bedford 2030 aims to engage 150 Bedford residents (tenants, homeowners and landlords all welcome!) by this fall with a free personal energy coach to improve health, save on energy costs, and reduce emissions.

Enjoy wine, cheese, energy info, and meet Bob, the personal energy coach, on Thursday April 28 from 7-9pm at the Bedford Playhouse.

Register (for free!) to attend the event and...
  • Chat with Energy Coach Bob

Never be late to an Easter Egg Hunt!

Great advice from Kim O'Brien, Recreation & Parks Assistant Superintendent who organizes this annual event for the Town of Bedford residents and their children ages 2-10. The 10,000 Easter Eggs filled with treats for the avid sugar hunters were sprawled across the Fox Lane High School Football Field. As soon as the "go" rang, the friendly chaos ensued, and all the eggs were scooped in 2 minutes! Along with the treats there was an Easter bunny for photo ops and a magician to round out an
egg-cellent holiday tradition!

The Bedford-Armonk Rotary has put out their food collection tent with the help of the Bedford Presbyterian Church and is requesting donations from the community. Donations are split between the Community Center of Northern Westchester and the Mount Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry.

Thank you to the Bedford-Armonk Rotary for also being a sponsor for the drive for Ukraine.
Families in Bedford, Pound Ridge, and our surrounding towns stand in solidarity with Ukrainian families being displaced by the threat of war.

As this humanitarian crisis continues, we hope you will donate to our community fundraiser for the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

IRC is providing critical aid to children, parents, and other civilians fleeing their homes.
To contribute, go to bit.ly/bprstandswithukraine
Hosted by the Pound Ridge Human Rights Advisory Committee and with support from Idea committee of Bedford NY, the community fundraiser will also feature a candlelight vigil* in Scotts Corners at 7:00 pm on Monday, March 7 (at the corner of Westchester Avenue and Trinity Pass) during which residents can gather to stand in solidarity and also drop off donations of humanitarian supplies. Supplies will be donated to the Yonkers-based Afya Foundation to ship to the frontlines.
