21st Sunday After Pentecost

Perhaps the church, at its best, is “all ears.” God urges the faithful, again and again, to “listen up!”—to heed the word that gives life. So it was with Abraham and Sarah, Mary and Martha, and the early church at Colossae. So it is today as we join the assembly to hear the word of God, the word of life.

Devotional for the Week | from Sundays and Seasons

What’s in Your Wallet? Not Enough.

Say the word stewardship in some congregations and people are protectively guarding their wallets faster than you can say “pledge card”! Unfortunately, too often we associate stewardship exclusively with issues of money. The good news is that God wants our whole lives, wallets and all! Nevertheless, this week is prime time for stewardship campaigns in congregations across North America. Today’s gospel provides an ideal time to reflect on stewardship of all sorts—time, talent, and financial treasures.

The Pharisees approach Jesus in a thinly veiled attempt to trap him on issues of financial obligations to the Roman government. Their question of Jesus, simplified to the extreme, is, “Who gets your wallet?” If Jesus answered one way, he would be guilty of treason. If he answered the other way, he would have been considered guilty of heresy in the eyes of the religious leaders. Jesus responds by issuing a challenge of his own: “Give . . . to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s” (Matt. 22:21). This statement challenges us to ponder: If God created the world and everything in it, doesn’t everything belong to God? God wants a whole lot more than just your wallet. God wants your life, wallet and all!

The Joy of Generosity

Greetings from Christ Lutheran Church. This weekend, we are excited to begin “The Joy of Generosity” in our congregation. As you prepare for worship, we encourage you to think about your own experiences with generosity.

Often we think that giving things away leaves us with less. The bold claim of the Bible is that just the opposite is true: when you give things away, you end up with more. In 2 Corinthians 9:11, Paul writes, “You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity.” Sociologists Christian Smith and Hilary Davidson write, “Generous people tend to receive back goods that are even more valuable than those they gave away: happiness, health, a sense of purpose in life, and personal growth.”*

How has your life demonstrated Paul’s promise that we will be enriched through our generosity? How has generous giving of time or money increased your sense of purpose in life? We will consider these thought-provoking questions in worship this weekend. We hope you will join us.

  2. Giving is much more private.
  3. Minimizes Sunday morning counting and bank trips.
  4. Florida snowbirds don’t have to send physical checks in the mail.
  5. Credit/Debit cards are a second option to direct bank-to-bank transactions if desired.
  6. Specialized giving such as ‘Furnace Fund’ can be easily set up to avoid the hassle of separate checks or cash for miscellaneous giving.
  7. You have complete control of starting/stopping/changing as you wish.
  8. A history of your giving is directly available through the Vanco app without having to check with the Financial Secretary.
  9. Money is transferred to our church checking account in a matter of 1-2 days rather than a week or two after the fact.

If you are ready to make the change from paper, please speak with Jerre Fercho or Bob Howell. They will be happy to talk with you about the advantages and get you set up!

We thank everyone for what has been given to date and appreciate all efforts made to stay current.

Thank you!
