Layoffs remain very low. Initial unemployment claims unexpectedly fell to 196,000, the lowest level since mid-July. The four-week average also declined, while the national unemployment rate remains 4.1%. For employers, this is evidence that businesses are generally holding onto workers rather than moving toward widespread layoffs, supporting continued consumer spending and economic stability. Consumer spending came in much stronger than expected. US retail and food-service sales jumped 1.2% in August and were 6.0% higher than a year ago, reaching $773.9 billion. The gain was broad-based, and a closely watched measure of underlying retail spending rose an even stronger 1.4%. For businesses, resilient consumer demand is an important indication that economic growth continues despite higher energy prices and interest rates. Source: Census.Gov
