Construction down in flat employment report
Construction employment and overall employment were on different paths in July, reports Statistics Canada. While the overall employment picture was little changed for the month, the construction sector took a significant hit, dropping more positions than any other sector in the monthly Labour Force Survey. According to the most recent edition of the report, the sector has lost 45,000 workers, or almost three per cent of its workers, since June. The July drop follows a smaller decline experienced in June, when the sector lost 14,000 workers. Since January, employment in construction has decreased by 71,000, more than eclipsing a cumulative increase of 65,000 experienced from September of 2022 to January.

Canada funds construction of purpose-built rental homes in Kitchener
The Government of Canada announced the construction of 60 purpose-built rental homes in Kitchener. These new homes are made possible through a fully repayable low-interest loan of over $16 million through the Rental Construction Financing Initiative (RCFi).
Canada’s construction of rental homes has not kept pace with the country’s growing cities and population, leading to a decline in the existing and aging rental stock for decades. To help address this issue, the Government of Canada has introduced the RCFi to stimulate the construction of rental housing across the country.

Immigration change aims to address construction labour shortage
Canada’s Express Entry system is now tailored to provide a streamlined and efficient immigration pathway for individuals with expertise in critical fields, including those in need by the construction sector. By prioritizing the invitation of skilled newcomers with experience in the trades, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says it is aiming to meet the increasing demand for talent and fill key positions that contribute to the nation’s economic growth and advancement. In May, Sean Fraser, the previous minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship, announced changes to Express Entry through category-based selection.

For the new park being built on the historic Canada Malting Co. property in Toronto, landscape designers PFS Studio created two distinct outdoor rooms: a water’s edge sun deck connected to the arts centre, and a multi-purpose event plaza at the base of the silos.
Construction on Bathurst Quay Common started in June with a groundbreaking ceremony hosted by the City of Toronto, marking the third and final construction phase in the larger revitalization of the property. The one-acre park is located at 3 Eireann Quay.
