Why is Youth Sunday an important expression of worship?
As a pastor’s grandkid, and kid and 20-year minister, I’ve gone to a lot of churches over the years, and all of them, even the ones that are similar, vary greatly in their practice of worship. Worship has always been a fascinating thing for me, especially in the American church. It’s a time when so much individuality is viewed in unison. All too often, when we attend worship, we do so in a way that leads us to believe, “This is how it’s done” (or also, “that’s not how we do it”) … and that couldn’t be further from a standard form. We don’t consciously acknowledge or account for tradition, denomination, region, preference, race, socio-economic class, and so many other factors. That does an injustice to us and the act of worship when we don’t acknowledge that this is simply how we worship. At its core, worship is a space for communal education, rest, spiritual engagement, wrestling, togetherness, thanksgiving, and connection through songs that are both old and new to us. This is our best expression, and over the 75 years of our particular church and its context and mission, our worship looks a lot like us, and as we change, so does our worship, because it’s our worship of God.

| | | It’s one of the reasons I love Youth Sunday; it is such a beautiful expression of what matters to our students in what they “call dibs” on when we start the planning process. It was funny last year at camp watching them whisper about who would preach next year and witnessing the ones who had no interest 10 months ago be the first to volunteer as their time in the youth ministry comes to a close. This Sunday is Youth Sunday, and it’s a great expression of not only who our students are, but who our church is. It’s a check on whether or not we practice what we say we value. Many of them are not nervous because we have developed an environment where they watch and participate throughout their development, so this Sunday becomes an opportunity for them to continue to share what God is up to around them and through them, as well as what this community means to them. So, I hope you worship with us this week with an understanding that whether you raised these students or not, all of the youth are yours because we are all bound together as community. What a wonderful expression of worship. - Caleb

| | | Room In The Inn and Men's Shelter Lunch, March 14 | | |
Saturday, March 14 will be a busy day for Park Road volunteers! Some of us will be in the mountains helping to make progress on Jennifer’s house that weekend. Others will be hosting Room in the Inn on Saturday night at Myers Park United Methodist (most of those volunteer slots are already filled by the Knight family). On that Saturday morning, we still need people to help prepare and serve lunch at the Men’s Shelter, 1210 N. Tryon St. Food preparation begins at 10:30, and no prior experience is necessary. Lunch is served at noon, and by 12:45 you’ll be free to leave. Sign up to help here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0945aca92da2fd0-roof#/

The senior adults of the church are looking forward to the next VSP (Very Special People) luncheon on Thursday, March 19, at noon in Helt Hall. We will enjoy a delicious meal followed by a short program. Then Daniel Miles will entertain us. If you've never attended VSP, please give us a try. Where else can you get delightful fellowship, a good meal, excellent entertainment, and perhaps win a table centerpiece, all for $8?
Make reservations by noon Tuesday, March 17, by signing the list in Helt Hall on Sundays, calling the church office at (704) 523-5717, or emailing Max Carroll at maxhcarroll@gmail.com.
| | Join Us to Work at Jennifer's House, March 12-16 | | |
We’ve made a lot of progress on Jennifer’s house, and the end is in sight, but there’s still plenty of work to do. We hope to complete exterior siding and insulation; install interior doors, flooring, cabinets, lights, and plumbing fixtures; build steps; do interior trim carpentry; and paint. With one more big shared effort, we can get very close to completing the house!
The plan is for volunteers to help from Thursday, March 12, until Monday, March 16. You’re welcome to join for all of that time or for whatever day or days you are available. We just need to know your plans so that we can arrange food and lodging, so please come for whatever days you can.
Please sign up in Helt Hall on Sunday morning or let Dan or Becka (info@ParkRoadBaptist.org) in the office know your plans no later than Monday, March 9.

My name is Rebecca Lewis, my husband, Sam and I have been members of Park Road since 2021. We have lived in the Ballantyne area for the past six years. We welcomed our son, Cooper, in February 2023 and he is loving the nursery life and making new little friends at Park Road! We are super excited for what the future holds for our children’s ministry. I’m a member of the choir as well as a new deacon this year and I’m looking forward to serving the Park Road families! I currently teach music part-time at Smart Diehl Academy in Mint Hill, NC and work a full-time Mary Kay business as an Independent Beauty Consultant. I love my flexible schedule and getting to be home with our son Cooper.
