MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

I share with you an Op-Ed I recently wrote, which was published in the Bronx Times, Mott Haven Herald, and Hunts Point Express last week. Continue to encourage each other, as the needs of our students are many, and all voices need to be heard to ensure fairness and equity.

Hostos Community College is Helping Students in More Ways Than One

March 17, 2023

By Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., President

It takes significant commitment, generosity and hope to continue to work tenaciously on social justice, equity, generational transformation and the student-centeredness evidenced in so much of the work taking place at Eugenio María de Hostos Community College.

In the last two years, Hostos’ resilient students have overcome the impact of a pandemic when meeting basic needs such as food and housing insecurity, the digital divide created by virtual classes, and studying under difficult circumstances without access to the warmth, space and quiet of the college. Now, life is coming back to campus, with majority in-person offerings, the reopening of our cafeteria and library, and access to in-person advisement. Our enrollment headcount for the spring 2023 semester is up by 7.3%.

At Hostos Community College we have seen growth in enrollment and improvement in our fall to spring retention. Our ability to produce generational transformation by means of public education has been acknowledged nationally. Among many recognitions, we were named a Top Ten Aspen 2023 finalist (along with our CUNY sister, Kingsborough Community College).

A powerful example of the generational change that Hostos routinely helps bring about lies in the inspiring story of student Johana Bahana. Despite her father’s belief that she should not be educated and instead focus on marriage and having children, Johana felt she had a right to an education and a better life. So, she moved to NYC and obtained her GED at Hostos. However, when she tried to enroll in a degree program she failed the test due to her limited English skills. With the help of the CUNY Language Immersion Program and CUNYStart, she managed to improve her competency and enrolled in one of Hostos’ associate degree programs for credit. Ultimately, she graduated with honors, achieved a place on the Dean’s List with a 3.9 GPA, won the Scholastic Achievement and Academic Excellence Awards from ASAP, all while being a mother to a boy, who was cared for by the Hostos Children’s Center while she studied.

Since graduating, she has obtained a BBA from Lehman College and is now pursuing a MBA at Baruch College with further plans to achieve a Ph.D in leadership in 2025. She is also a passionate advocate for Hostos and CUNY, as well as all the support programs we offer at the college that helped her begin her journey.

“Based on my experiences, my passion is to help motivate students to continue their education, help them with advice on their pathways, scholarships, and tutoring benefits to enjoy all the resources that CUNY offers. This is a legacy that I do on my own with students who know me. I fully believe that education is the path to success, and we all have the right to have it. I am here helping my community to achieve it in whatever way I can,” Bahana said.

Reflecting on Johana’s story, I am reminded this is a time of growth and forward movement for our deserving students. Community colleges such as Hostos provide a vehicle for social transformation by means of quality, affordable public higher education.

As the college celebrates the 55th anniversary of its founding this April, we are reminded of the contributions our namesake, the Puerto Rican philosopher and educator, Don Eugenio María de Hostos made to pedagogy and to the improvement of teaching to women and poor communities in the Americas. His words “enseñad al pueblo a pensar” (“let’s teach the people to think”), resonate in everything that we do.

Hostos Community College is the civil rights gain of the Puerto Rican and now other Hispanic, Black and sister communities in the South Bronx, the nation’s poorest congressional district. Today our student population is 60% Hispanic and 35% Black, so 95% of the students we serve are from under-represented communities.

As was done in the 1970s, an additional investment from the state and city is needed to support public higher education in the South Bronx. In doing so, we prepare the next generations attending Hostos to transform their lives by means of education.

SHARING A FAVORITE POEM

"Wisdom"

By Makeda, Queen of Sheba (ca. 1000 B.C.)

Wisdom is

sweeter than honey,

brings more joy

than wine,

illumines

more than the sun,

is more precious

than jewels.

She causes

the ears to hear

and the heart to comprehend.

I love her

like a mother,

and she embraces me

as her own child.

I will follow

her footprints

and she will not cast me away.

MS. MACKENZIE SCOTT’S GIFT: PRESIDENT’S INITIATIVES

Submitted by Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D., Research Programs Director

Dear Students and Colleagues,

I am deeply overjoyed by the outpouring of support and community engagement demonstrated at our first Interfaith Symposium and Luncheon that was held on March 14. I am deeply grateful to the interfaith leaders who participated, including Hostos Chaplain Father James Sheehan, Rabbi Kaplan of the Jewish Community Relations Council, Kujegi Camara, Assistant Director of the Fordham University Center for Community Engaged Learning, and Rabbi Pewzner of the Bronx Jewish Center. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the wonderful students who participated in our interfaith panel, Kacey Witter, Ansumana Jammeh, and Alana Nuñez Trinidad, who shared their diverse faith experiences with us. It is my hope to continue having these kinds of forums to promote continued dialogue that will guide us to greater understanding and collaboration in our Hostos community.

The month of March continues to be one full of exciting events and activities sponsored by the Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiatives. On March 21, we held the President’s Recognition Tea in Honor of Women’s History Month, a beautiful event where President Cocco De Filippis recognized the incredible perseverance and resiliency of 15 students who overcame major obstacles while excelling in their studies. I look forward to the next cohort of students receiving this same distinction at the President’s Recognition Barbeque on April 4.

Next week is a momentous occasion for Hostos as we inaugurate and officially open the Hostos Research Center on March 30. Invitations are being extended to the media, elected officials, and the CUNY community to join us as we open a new chapter in the history of Hostos. The Hostos Research Center will be the first research center in a CUNY community college dedicated to developing new faculty and staff-led multi-disciplinary research to foster faculty-to-student mentorship and provide our students with career-building research opportunities. All the Hostos family is invited to join us in this celebration as we officially open the Hostos Research Center!

Two Students are Selected as Jack Cooke Kent Semi-Finalists

Two students of Professor Lauren Wolfe, Kaplan Scholars Fatima Bah and José González, just became finalists for the Jack Cooke Kent Scholarship!

José González studied math as a young freshman at Hostos and soon realized he was a natural and decided to pursue a Business/Accounting degree. He has been the Reimagining Justice Club president and a member of the Math Club. He has also been a part of many initiatives and organizations: Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), CUNY Research Scholars Program (CRSP), the Mentor/Mentee Jobs On Campus program, the Student Leadership Academy (SLA), and now serves as president of the Student Government Association (SGA). Plus, he has attended national leadership conferences. On March 27, we can hear his success story in room B-501 at 3:30 p.m.

Fatima Bah sailed through her math courses and became a tutor through Work-Study. She is the Math Club president and has been for almost two years. She is also a member of many important programs and organizations: Reimagining Justice Club, CSTEP, CRSP, Hostos Engineering Academic Talent (HEAT), and an intern at NYC Department of Buildings. She is completing a double major in Mathematics and Engineering. She recently attended the Society of Women Engineers conference.

These scholarships “are designed to encourage and support outstanding students who work hard and have financial need. Our scholarships provide financial assistance and academic support to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. In addition to the monetary award, students join a thriving network of nearly 3,200 Cooke Scholars.”

The Office of Academic Affairs is very proud to share and celebrate this incredible news! Congratulations Professor Wolfe, José and Fátima!

Succeed@Hostos is Great to Communicate with Students!

Personally, I found Succeed@Hostos to be very helpful for connecting with students because of the ease of sending individual or mass communications. You can send requested information to a particular student just by loading their profile and sending a note, or by selecting all active students in your caseload and sending important messages all at once. As a bonus, you can see if the students have read the messages sent, and thus determine if they may need additional attention and/or outreach efforts.

Accessibility Resource Center (ARC)

Congratulations to Ms. Lennyn Jacob, who was recognized alongside our President Daisy Cocco De Filippis as one of 2023 Higher Education Power 100 administrators. She serves the community in many ways as a Disability Accommodation Specialist and chair of the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities, organization that serves over 11,000 students.

As a Hostos staff member, a CUNY student, a mother of a neurodivergent son, and coalition chair, Lennyn Jacob advocates for advancements in opportunity and accessibility for students. She has submitted testimony to the Assembly several times and actively advocates for budget expansions for disability services.

On the other hand, ARC staff attended the Bronx Education Fair held at Lehman College on Saturday, March 11. ARC collaborated with Admissions and College Discovery to present about the College and our world-class staff, faculty, and programs that make our campus a prime destination for any student beginning their higher education academic journey.

On Wednesday, March 15, President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, along with CUNY Vice Chancellor Denise B. Maybank and other Hostos senior leaders, attended the grand opening celebration of the first-ever classrooms for infants and one-year-olds. The new space will allow the campus-based center to accommodate babies beginning at 6 weeks old, thus expanding the amount of support available to our student-parents. Please get to know more about the important work at the Center here.

“To One Coming North”

By Claude McKay

At first you'll joy to see the playful snow,

Like white moths trembling on the tropic air,

Or waters of the hills that softly flow

Gracefully falling down a shining stair.

And when the fields and streets are covered white

And the wind-worried void is chilly, raw,

Or underneath a spell of heat and light

The cheerless frozen spots begin to thaw,

Like me you'll long for home, where birds' glad song

Means flowering lanes and leas and spaces dry,

And tender thoughts and feelings fine and strong,

Beneath a vivid silver-flecked blue sky.

But oh! more than the changeless southern isles,

When Spring has shed upon the earth her charm,

You'll love the Northland wreathed in golden smiles

By the miraculous sun turned glad and warm.

Important Announcements

Feminine Hygiene Product Availability

The College is pleased to announce that feminine hygiene product dispensers have been installed in all of the Women’s multi-stall restrooms across campus. The feminine hygiene products provided include tampons and sanitary pads, which are free of charge. CUNY and its campuses recognize that providing access to free menstrual products can remove yet another barrier to student academic success, as many students may be unable to afford them. We’re glad to support them in this manner to alleviate their financial burden and stress.

Purchasing Deadline Reminder

The last day to submit fully-approved and valid budget-checked Purchase Requisitions in CUNYfirst is Friday, March 31, at 5 p.m.

Goods/services received by the College after June 30, 2023 cannot be charged to the FY 2022-2023 budget, as per the City of New York and CUNY’s procurement regulations. Additionally, once goods/services are received, it’s imperative that departments submit their Receiving Reports in a timely manner to facilitate payments to vendors.
