Message From the AAML President

By: Thomas Sasser, AAML President

Dear Fellows,

As we begin a new year together, I want to wish each of you a healthy, successful and fulfilling 2026. The New Year is traditionally a time for reflection, intention and renewal — and it is in that spirit that the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers enters 2026. My message this month is a bit longer than normal, but I have so much to share with you. I hope you will read all the way to the end.

AAML Strategic Plan

This year, the Academy’s 2026 Strategic Plan Actions serve as our collective New Year’s resolutions. They reflect both who we are and who we aspire to become: an organization grounded in excellence, strengthened by community and committed to thoughtful modernization.

At the core of the AAML Strategic Plan are three guiding goals — Enriching Membership, Amplifying Community and Enhancing Organizational Effectiveness — and the actions we are advancing in 2026 bring those goals to life. Among our key resolutions:

  • Modernizing the Bounds of Advocacy to reflect today’s practice realities while preserving the Academy’s highest standards
  • Refreshing AAML’s branding, marketing and messaging, including a new, cohesive messaging framework for our audiences
  • Defining “the AAML experience” so that the value and expectations of Fellowship are clear at every stage
  • Modernizing administrative policies and policy-related handbooks to improve transparency and efficiency
  • Reducing average admission processing time to seven months, while maintaining the rigor of Fellowship
  • Increasing sponsor revenue to support long-term organizational sustainability

These are ambitious goals by design, and I am confident that — with your engagement — we will make meaningful progress in the year ahead.

New in 2026: AAML Communities of Practice

I am especially excited to share an important new offering approved by the House of Governors that will launch in 2026: Communities of Practice.

Communities of Practice within AAML will provide Fellows with a dedicated space to connect around shared professional interests through networking, learning and the exchange of best practices. These communities will engage virtually through discussion forums, resource libraries and targeted programming, with opportunities to gather in person at AAML meetings and events.

By creating meaningful opportunities to collaborate with peers on broader firm initiatives and shared challenges, Communities of Practice enhance the value of Fellowship and strengthen our sense of professional community.

We will begin with two inaugural Communities of Practice:

  • Law Firm and Practice Management
  • Legal Technology

More details on participation and enrollment will be shared soon, and I encourage you to consider where your interests and experience may align.

2026 Midyear Meeting: Register Now!

I also strongly encourage you to join us for the AAML Midyear Meeting, taking place March 10–13 in Scottsdale, AZ. Set against the backdrop of the Sonoran Desert, the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess offers a world-class resort experience with exceptional dining, world class golf at TPC Scottsdale, two phenomenal spas, three amazing pools and invigorating walking trails. With warm days and cool evenings, March is one of the very best times of year to be in Scottsdale. Plan to bring your family, as there will something for everyone to enjoy from beautiful desert views to aerial yoga to MLB Cactus League Spring Training. It is a perfect environment to step away from the demands of practice, engage deeply with colleagues and return refreshed and inspired.

Please be sure to register and book your hotel room as soon as possible — the room block at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is limited and expected to sell out.

Important Dues Reminder

Finally, a brief but important administrative reminder. December 31, 2025 was the deadline for payment of 2026 AAML annual dues. For those Fellows who have not yet paid, there is a limited grace period through Jan. 31, 2026. Dues may be paid by logging into your profile on the AAML website. Timely payment ensures your continued fellowship and allows the Academy to continue delivering great programs, initiatives and services.

Thank you for your dedication to the Academy and to the families we serve. With a clear strategic roadmap and an engaged Fellowship, I am confident that 2026 will be a defining year for AAML.

Warm regards,

Thomas J. Sasser

President, American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers

Join Us in February for Let's Talk About It

Words Matter: A Culturally Competent Look at Everyday Sayings

AAML's Racial, Ethnic and Religious Considerations in Family Law Committee (RERC) is starting off our program year with another installment in our new discussion series Let’s Talk About It. As a reminder, these discussion groups support the mission of the RERC Committee to foster education and inclusion among Academy Fellows. Let’s Talk About It is a welcoming space where people can come together for real, honest conversations about the issues that shape our interactions with clients, staff, colleagues, other professionals, court systems and others we encounter in our practice and daily life.

Join us Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m. CT for our February discussion on “Words Matter: A Culturally Competent look at Everyday Sayings.” Seemingly harmless phrases and “common sayings” often carry racial, ethnic, religious or other bias rooted in historical discrimination. Gain practical tools for recognizing problematic language so you can understand its impact on families and communities and learn how to be more inclusive and culturally competent in advocacy, mediation and courtroom settings.

Now Available: AAML Religious and Cultural Holidays Guide

Become a more informed representative and advocate by exploring AAML’s new “Religious and Cultural Holidays Guide,” developed by AAML’s Publication Committee and now available in the My AAML Library under On-Demand Content. This guide is designed to support greater understanding and inclusivity by providing insights into the diverse holidays and rituals observed across families and communities, both faith-based and secular. Use this guide to deepen your awareness and foster respect for traditions that enrich our shared human experience.

Bridging the Gap: Transitioning From Mediation to Arbitration Effectively

Conflict resolution doesn't always end at the mediation table. When agreements stall or disputes persist, arbitration often becomes the next step — but how do professionals transition given ethical considerations, judicial review and client expectations?

Join us Tuesday, Jan. 27, when experienced practitioners John A. Pappalardo and Maris J. Weiner will explore the practical and strategic transition from mediation to arbitration. They will examine how mediation outcomes, negotiation dynamics and party expectations can inform arbitration strategy, evidence presentation and case framing. You’ll learn when and why arbitration is appropriate, how to preserve key advantages from mediation and what pitfalls to avoid when shifting forums.

Whether you guide clients through both processes, advise on dispute resolution options or simply want a deeper understanding of how these mechanisms intersect, this session delivers actionable insights to strengthen your approach and achieve better outcomes.

This webinar is complimentary to Fellows.
