Issue 86 | JULY/AUG 2019
Message from the Mayor

The month of May was one to remember! We celebrated our annual State of the City with record attendance, the Arts Center’s 2019–2020 season announcement, the ribbon cutting of five electric vehicle charging stations at Lincoln Commons and the highly-anticipated grand opening of our three new light rail stations.

Vision, collaboration and perseverance were at the core of each of these successes. Many individuals played important roles in bringing these projects to fruition, particularly the Southeast Rail Extension. I’d like to especially acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the City’s former mayors Jack O’Boyle and Jim Gunning who championed the light rail project. We can’t thank them enough for their good work.

In addition, I’d like to give a very special shoutout to the Lone Tree Youth Commission. They organized and presented an informative and very timely youth mental health awareness event in May. We are so fortunate to have these talented, engaged future leaders in our community.

The City continues to have much to be proud of, so read on for more good news!

Lone Tree Celebrates Grand Opening of Three New Light Rail Stations
On May 17, clear blue skies and a warm morning set the stage for the long-awaited ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony for a project that started more than two decades ago—the Southeast Rail Extension, which brings three new light rail stations to Lone Tree.

During her remarks, Mayor Jackie Millet attributed the success of this project to the vision of former Lone Tree mayors Jack O’Boyle and Jim Gunning, and the strong partnership and collaboration with local jurisdictions, developers, RTD and the business community.

RTD’s Southeast Rail Extension brings Sky Ridge Station, City Center Station and RidgeGate Parkway Station to Lone Tree with 2.3 more miles of track and 1,300 new parking spaces at the end-of-line RidgeGate Parkway station.
New Light Rail Stations Open with Station Sensation Festival

On May 18, hundreds of people jumped on board Lone Tree’s three new light rail stations to get to Station Sensation—a street festival hosted by the City of Lone Tree, in partnership with RidgeGate and South Metro Denver Chamber, to celebrate the opening of the Southeast Rail Extension.

The lively street festival featured live music, a watermelon eating contest, carnival games, face painting, wall climbing, performances, food trucks and much more!
New Stations Offer New Opportunities for All Ages

Members of Lone Tree’s Living & Aging Well group took advantage of the grand opening of the Southeast Rail Extension to ride from RidgeGate Parkway Station to explore downtown Denver’s Union Station and better familiarize themselves with light rail travel. Seasoned RTD travelers gave tips on how to pay using a credit card, prepaid fare card or phone app, and where to board with a walker or wheelchair. The group’s consensus? A great and comfortable alternative to driving on I-25!
Public Art Collection Grows with Opening of New Stations

New public artwork has found its home in Lone Tree, thanks to the opening of the three new light rail stations within our City! Each piece is part of RTD’s Art-n-Transit program, created to enhance the design, aesthetic quality and user friendliness of transit projects, as well as to foster transit-oriented community development.

Willow by Curtis Pittman (top)
Located at Sky Ridge Station, this tall and graceful piece is nestled at the edge of the station plaza area and takes aesthetic cues from the local prairie grasses, autumn’s Quaking Aspen trees and Colorado ranch life.

All Is Well Under the Trees by Sandra Fettingis (middle)
Located at the Sky Ridge, Lone Tree City Center and RidgeGate Parkway stations, this series of windscreens represents a canopy of vibrant, green and safe trees that invite visitors to stand among them. Each of the stations has been outfitted with unique designs inspired by shapes found in leaves and pine needles.

END of LINE by Erik Carlson and Erica Carpenter (bottom)
Located at RidgeGate Parkway Station, this work features the cattle brands that were once the code of the past for the ranches that dominated the local landscape. As the code continues, it becomes modern-day computer language.

SSPR Breaks Ground on Regional Recreation Complex

Construction is underway on South Suburban Parks and Recreation’s new regional recreation complex, located southwest of East County Line Road and South Holly Street. The 206,000-square-foot complex will feature a fieldhouse with two synthetic turf fields and two gymnasiums with pickleball courts, three sheets of ice and district administration offices.

It will also offer opportunities for drop-in sports, such as basketball, volleyball and soccer, and rental space for parties and meetings.

Council Approves Special Events Permit

Each year the City receives requests from residents, businesses and nonprofit organizations to hold events that impact traffic, close City streets, or require City resources like major facilities or LTPD officers.

In May, City Council approved changes to the City Code and City Fee Schedule to allow the City to better monitor these events and recover the costs for the review and administration of such events.

This permit process will not include any private house parties, private HOA parties, or celebrations in City parks as long as there are no impacts to traffic or streets, or require City resources.

City Celebrates Addition of EV Charging Stations

Mayor Jackie Millet and members of City Council were recently joined by representatives from the Colorado Department of Transportation, Colorado Energy Office, Coventry Development and the Regional Air Quality Council at an “underground” ribbon- cutting ceremony celebrating the addition of five electric vehicle (EV) charging stations within our City.

The new stations are located in the lower level of the Target/ Lincoln Commons parking garage and include a fast-charging station that can fully charge a vehicle in 30 – 40 minutes. The cost to use the stations—which were funded in part by Rampart Range Metro District and a grant from the Regional Air Quality Council— vary from 15 – 30 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Local Teen Recognized for Lifesaving Efforts

Council recently presented 15-year-old Kyla Colomina with the City of Lone Tree Lifesaver Award for her heroic actions as a volunteer at Sky Ridge Medical Center on March 16 when she helped save a man who was in critical need.

Just days before the incident, Colomina had been trained on how to call in a STAT (an immediate emergency notification) and said she felt she was meant to be there that day when a man began experiencing stroke-like symptoms. Not only was she able to call in the STAT, but being fluent in Spanish, Colomina was also able to translate for him once it became clear he didn’t speak English.

The Chaparral High School student—who herself was born at Sky Ridge Medical Center and has lived in Lone Tree ever since— plans to keep busy this summer by picking up additional volunteer shifts and working toward getting her pilot’s license.
Lone Tree’s Youth Commission Brings Awareness to Mental Health

On May 17, more than 100 guests attended It’s Not Nothing , an event hosted by the Lone Tree Youth Commission and sponsored by Sky Ridge Medical Center to bring awareness to youth mental health.

This event, which featured guest speakers, a mental health resource fair and a Q&A, provided a raw look at how mental illness affects youth and explored ways to bridge the disconnects between youth and mental health resources.

Johns—who’s family includes mom Patricia, dad Troy, younger brother Trevor and dog Leo—has lived in Lone Tree for 12 years.

Lone Tree Police Department
Chief's Corner

I’ve been with the City of Lone Tree for more than two years now, and the support LTPD gets from our residents, business community and partners has far exceeded
my expectations. I enjoy being part of such an engaged community that is eager to learn more about what we do.

One great example is our Citizen’s Police Academy, which wrapped up in May with nearly 20 participants excited to get a behind-the-scenes look at what our officers do.

They not only got hands-on experience driving a patrol car and practicing arrests, but they also helped us further preserve and improve our partnership with the community, which is key to helping us keep Lone Tree safe.

In fact, many graduates from our Citizen’s Police Academy go on to become Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS), serve as Victim Advocate volunteers or are even hired by LTPD as Community Safety Officers.

This is a testament to the strong partnership between LTPD and its —one that we strive to continue strengthening every day. Thank you for your support!
