Harris' Cramp Cure Broadside

Broadside reads: "Harris' Cramp Cure - Dr. Harris' Cramp Cure for Every Ache - Dr. Harris' Cramp Cure for Every Pain - Dr. Harris' Cramp Cure 25 & 50 ¢ size." Broadside measures 6 ¾" x 41 ¾". Broadside is matted; the top and bottom edges of the broadside are mounted onto the foam board. Colors are bright and crisp; there are two vertical fold lines that span the width of the poster and a couple smaller fold lines. Overall very good.

This eye-catching broadside has a great illustration (pictured three times on the broadside) of a boy clutching his stomach in pain. One of his shoes has fallen off and he has dropped a basket of produce. Even though he is in a pretty sorry state, all this boy needs to do is use some of Dr. Harris' Cramp Cure and he will be right as rain. Around each illustration is a factoid about Dr. Harris' miracle cure "used internally, used externally," "As a liniment excells[sic] all others," and "Cholera-morbus, Tooth-ache." A fun, bright advertisement in very nice condition. 023040. $475

Helena & Frisco Mining Company Correspondence
Collection of 85 ALS and TLS on Helena & Frisco Mining Company letterhead. 78 letters are ALS and 7 are TLS. Letters are dated from 1880 to 1897 with most from 1894 to 1897. Letters are 1-4pp each, and most are the standard 8 ½" x 11" with a few smaller. All have fold lines and many have rubber stamps reading "Received" or "Answered" with the date. Most are written in a clear hand. Letters are housed in modern three-ring binders. Most letters are clean but a few have moderate foxing, smudging or dampstaining. Overall very good.

The letters were almost exclusively written by Joseph MacDonald of the Helena & Frisco Mining Company at Frisco, Canyon Creek, Idaho to D. P. Patenaude of the A. M. Holter Hardware Company in Helena, Montana. A handful of letters were written by other individuals of the Helena & Frisco Mining Company (2 such letters are on letterhead with the Company's original name, the Helena & San Francisco Mining Co., dated to 1880), or from Company to Company without stating a specific person. The Helena & Frisco Mining Company had mines along Canyon Creek in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of Shoshone County, Idaho. The most productive district in Idaho, the area chiefly mined lead, zinc and silver. The Company was owned by a group in Helena, Montana with principal owners being S. T. Hauser, A. M. Holter and John T. Murphy. A.M. Holter, proprietor of the A. M. Holter Hardware Company, is the addressee and referenced in a few letters, but MacDonald mostly writes to the manager of the Hardware Company, D. P. Patenaude. The author of most of these letters, Joseph MacDonald, was manager of the Helena & Frisco Mining Company and other mines throughout the west. MacDonald was manager at the time of the Coeur d'Alene labor strike of 1892 which ended in violence including a shootout and the destruction of the Frisco Mill.

The letters in this collection contain a wealth of information regarding the machinery and equipment used at a turn of the century mining operation. Letters discuss orders placed and queries about materials and machinery. A letter dated to April 15, 1896 reads, "Dear Sir, Enclosed you will please find our order #465. I am told that one of these hand grenades thrown into a fire is equal to 20 buckets of water, and if that is so I think it would be a good caution to have about 4 dozen distributed all over the works..." There are a handful of letters regarding damages caused by the railroad to an order of pipe. On a letter dated to Feb. 13th, 1895 MacDonald writes, "Enclosed I send you a communication received from Mr. Boyd Asst. Divisions Supt. N. P. R. R. Co. at Wallace, upon my inquiry regarding claims to damages I sent him some time ago..." An excellent set of letters for the mining historian or collector. 023041. $1,950

Sioux Chief Spotted Eagles Hostile Village Tongue River Montana Territory 1879 Hand-Colored Photograph [Signed 14 1/4 X 24 Inches]
Huffman, L. A., Miles City, Montana, 1879. Hand-colored photograph titled "Sioux Chief Spotted Eagles Hostile Village Tongue River Montana Territory 1879" measuring 14 1/4 x 24 inches. Signed in manuscript by the photographer L. A. Huffman. Light toning and wear to edges both recto and verso, likely from previous framing. Very light foxing dots to recto while verso shows multitude of small brown dots.

Owner's grandmother embellished the print by drawing teepee poles and several teepee closures in pencil. We believe it would be easy to have an archivist remove these marks; they are at least 50 years old. Print also has manuscript marking on facing of barrel "AQMS Ft. Keogh MT" likely in pencil. Owner is convinced that his grandmother did NOT make this change. In speaking with Huffman expert Gene Allen, he states that this likely was added by Huffman or someone in Huffman's studio and stands for, "Army Quartermaster Service Fort Keogh, Montana Territory." Allen has seen other examples similar to this. These barrels were used to transport hardtack and were provided by the Army to Indian encampments. Allen states that later versions had the barrel removed from the negative and in some case the brightly hand-colored Indian was also removed from the photo. Nonetheless, a famous and rare large L. A. Huffman image.

Gene Allen writes: "Laton Alton Huffman arrived in Miles City, Montana Territory in December of 1879. He was 25 years old and had come to seek the recently vacated position of post photographer at nearby Fort Keogh. Fort Keogh was a military post established shortly after the Custer incident in 1876 to provide a military presence in eastern Montana. He was appointed post photographer, an unpaid position that provided a dirt floor log studio and an opportunity to make and sell photographs. This was a rapidly changing time in Montana's history. Hostilities between early settlers and Native Americans were drawing to a close and reservation life was beginning. The demise of the great buffalo herds was near, clearing the way for large scale cattle ranching. The railroad arrived in Miles City in 1881 and changed everything. The arrival of large numbers of farmers with their plows and fences would permanently alter the landscape of eastern Montana. During all of this, Huffman was there taking photographs - landscapes, animals, early ranches, street scenes and, especially, people doing their work. His photos of buffalo hunting taken between 1880 - 83 are some of the few that exist and are among the most historically significant images he produced. By far his most extensive and complete body of work relates to the cattle industry and its associated activities. He photographed the beginning, heyday, and end of the open range days. In addition to his skill and artistry as a photographer, he was able to incorporate his previous experiences as a rancher. He participated in roundups, helped with the activities and knew many of the area's ranchers and cowboys. His ability to anticipate the action helped him to be in the right place at the right time. His early action-stopping photos, many taken from his "four legged tripod", are unequaled.". 023023. $6,000
