An urgent alert from the US Section of the
Women's International League for Peace and Freedom
Speak up to support the New York City Council resolution to Move the Money to Human Needs!
February 2019 New York City Hall press conference announcing the introduction of RES747, the Move The Money, From War To Our Communities legislation. Council Member and bill sponsor, Ydanis Rodriguez, addressing crowd.
Now is the time for you to take action on this resolution yourself, if you are a NYC resident, and also reach out to friends and family who are NYC residents to take action to pass Resolution 747-A this legislative session!
Join the coalition of local New York-area peace groups and 60 NYC organizations to pass Resolution 747-A before the end of the current City Council session. It’s time we Move the Money from war to the human needs of our communities!

  • Calls on New York City to urge Congress to make substantial cuts in the Pentagon war budget to fund human needs and services.
  • Mandates New York City to conduct in-depth public hearings to determine the extent of the need for federal funds for vital public services, including affordable housing, healthcare, and repairs to failing subways and schools.
  • New York City residents have the right to know and to comment publicly on how their tax dollars are spent and which services are funded and prioritized.

Already, in June 2017, the United States Conference of Mayors, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, unanimously passed a resolution calling upon all cities to hold public hearings.

WILPF US endorsed the Move the Money Campaign as part of our Call for Peace.
This week, please take these actions.
Let's build momentum!

  • Inform yourself with this Move the Money-NYC Fact Sheet.
  • To date, 23 City Council Members are sponsors of Res. 747-A; a simple majority of the 51 Members is needed to pass it. Find out whether your Council Member is a sponsor of Resolution 747-A here. If they are, thank them. If they are not, call and email your Council Member’s office to ask for their support, public endorsement, and a “yes” vote. When you call, ask for the legislative aide, and identify your WILPF US affiliation. Find your Council Member’s office phone number and email listed by district and borough here.
  • This week call and email Speaker Johnson at 212-788-7210 and SpeakerJohnson@council.nyc.gov  To date, Speaker Corey Johnson has not sent this Resolution from committee to the Council floor for a vote. Only the Speaker can do this. Request that Speaker Johnson act so the Council can vote. If this Resolution is not passed this session, it must be re-introduced when there may be new and unsupportive Members.
  • Sign this petition to Speaker Johnson and all the Council Members.
  • To volunteer to help the campaign, email movethemoney.nyc@gmail.com or call Matthew Weinstein at Brooklyn for Peace, 718-989-1466 and follow on Facebook.
  • Forward this eAlert to family and friends who live in one of the five boroughs: Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. Ask each to make a call and send an email.
  • Just think how a “yes” vote by New York City Council will boost local Move the Money campaigns underway in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Denver, Los Angeles, San Diego and elsewhere.
Additional important Congressional action

Please also take national action: Call your House Representatives member and ask them to join the new Defense Spending Reduction Caucus that Representatives Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Mark Pocan (D-WI) created in July 2020. Find your Representative’s Congressional office contact information by entering your zip code here.

The Caucus will recommend cuts to the National Defense Authorization Act that the House Armed Services Committee will present to the House for debate and a vote later this spring. President Biden’s proposed $753 Billion Fiscal Year 2022 defense budget is even larger than Trump’s most recent budget and includes upgrades of nuclear weapons and delivery systems (missiles, bombers and F-35 jets), drones, and submarines. Our government spends 60% of its discretionary budget on costly weapons and endless wars.

Endorse the Move the Money Campaign pledge as an individual.

Thank you for taking these actions.
