ICYMI: Student Needlestick/Injury Protocol

Though we hope you never have to encounter a student having a needlestick or injury, we know these things can occasionally happen. We want you to be prepared, so we've created a protocol for residents, faculty, and students to follow. This information is readily available to the students but often can be forgotten in the moment after a needlestick or injury occurs. It's for this reason that we ask residents and faculty to be aware of the protocol so you can assist students in these rare occurrences. For more information, visit the Injury and Needlestick Protocol website.

  1. Have the student seek medical care
  2. Send your student to the nearest emergency room or site-specified location. Do not delay!
  3. Remind the student to report the injury
  4. Students need to make senior residents, attending physicians, or supervising faculty aware of the needlestick or injury right away.
  5. Students must also email MDHealthRecords@wayne.edu to report the needlestick or injury right away.
  6. Remind students to complete the necessary forms
  7. Students must complete site-specific forms.
  8. Students must also complete the Report of Injury Form (to be submitted to the WSU Office of Risk Management).
  9. Encourage the student to follow up
  10. Remind students to reach out to the Office of Student Affairs for support.
  11. Remind students to remain in contact with the WSU Health Officer.
  12. Remind students to schedule follow-up testing and care with their PCP.

M4 Grades Get a Much-Needed Revamp

Due to your amazing success in getting M3 grades promptly available to students (and financial aid awardees), we're implementing a new grading process this year requiring just two weeks to turn in grades. This is incredibly important to our students' continued success and growth in their senior year before they head out to residencies around the country.

We need your help to make these efforts as much of a success as our M3 grading efforts in previous years, so here are some steps to this new process:

  1. Students will request evaluations early to be sure they have matched with appropriate preceptors and those preceptors are on New Innovations (NI) and can access their portal. (Email records@med.wayne.edu for assistance with NI.)
  2. Grades will be due on the last day of the students' rotation (typically the last day of the month).
  3. Preceptors and students will discuss how the student did during the rotation and what they can do to improve.
  4. The SOM will check how many grades have been submitted at our CQI point at mid-month. Tardy grades will be escalated to Department Chairs and UGME Directors as necessary.
  5. By changing the timeline and culture of the grading process, we ensure timely feedback so that students can work on graduation competencies throughout the whole year, and end up better prepared for residency. They will also be able to get their financial aid on time!

Congratulations to Our 305 Graduates!

Congratulations to our Class of 2025 students! This incredibly smart bunch walked across the Fox stage on Thursday, May 8 to join our distinguished alumni as Medical Doctors! We're so proud of their success and can't wait to see them in EDs, clinics, and operating rooms across the country in just a few weeks. Thank you to all of our resident and faculty educators who helped them reach this exciting day.

Now on to the next class!
