As former First Lady Rosalynn Carter famously said, ‘There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers.’

those in their care

Who is caring for the caregivers?

Nearly one in four American adults is a family caregiver. Among family caregivers, nearly one in four provides 40 or more hours of care each week and feels socially isolated. These statistics are reported by AARP and 2025 research from the National Alliance for Caregiving.

Behind those numbers are families who need support, breathing room, and connection.

Seniors Helping Seniors: A Win for Everyone

When adult children worry about an aging parent, the questions often go beyond “Did Mom take her medication?” or “Does Dad have groceries?”

Who is sharing a meal with them? Who is listening to their stories? Do they have something—and someone—to look forward to?

Families want their parents to feel safe, connected and valued. Yet finding dependable help can be challenging as demand for caregivers grows. And for someone spending too much time alone, companionship can be a welcome source of conversation, laughter and connection.

What if one person’s need for companionship could meet another person’s desire for purpose?

After more than 20 years on Wall Street, Connor May wanted work that offered a different kind of return: the opportunity to make a meaningful difference. He brought Seniors Helping Seniors® to Western Connecticut, connecting older adults who need support with older caregivers who have time, experience and kindness to share.

As Connor puts it, “I’m selling dignity.”

The person receiving care gains companionship and support. The person providing it gains meaningful paid work and the satisfaction of being needed. Adult children gain reassurance that someone is there for their parent.

That sounds like a win-win—with a third win for the family!

Together, we’ll explore:

  • The caregiving shortage and what it means for families seeking help.
  • What adult children want for their parents—and how to include parents’ own wishes in the conversation.
  • How companionship can help ease loneliness and isolation.
  • Why shared life experience can create a comfortable connection.
  • How helping someone else can bring purpose, connection and fulfillment into a caregiver’s life.

Whether you are supporting a parent, thinking about your own future, or looking for meaningful work in your next chapter, this conversation is for you.

Bring your questions, your concerns and your experiences. Let’s talk about how helping one another can make life richer for everyone involved.
