Summer made a brief appearance this week before disappearing into the cool, damp, cloudy climate that Spring in New England has become in recent years, but the season where Rhody really shines will inevitably return soon.
Our colleague Liam is relatively new to Rhode Island, so the team here put together a “Must Do” list for him so he can make plans –
Here’s what we came up with…
Go “off the beaten track” and take your bike on the Prudence Island ferry out of Bristol and explore the island. Be sure to ride to the top of Pine Hill for a magnificent, 360-degree view of the entire bay from Providence all the way down to Newport – it’s amazing. Important note – don’t miss the last ferry back! - David
These are Rhode Island Summer Musts: Visit Scarborough Beach and go for a walk on the Black Point Trail while you’re there … Enjoy a lobster roll and a Del’s Shandy at Blount’s in Warren ... Spend a day at Ocean Mist, try the ‘Coffee with Love’… Bonus points if you run into at least three people you went to college with while you’re there. - Abby
A paddle board trip on Green Hill Pond can’t be beat. From there spend some time at Charlestown Town Beach or the Breachway and top it off with a drink at the Matunuck Oyster Bar on the way home. - Jen
For me, a quintessential Rhode Island summer must include the following things: an early morning or late evening visit to the beach (preferably Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown or East Beach in Watch Hill - bonus points for bringing a boogieboard!); black Raspberry ice cream from Brickley’s; a leisurely bicycle ride on the East Bay or South County Bike Path, strolling around the Hope Street Farmer’s market; enjoying a bowl of clear clam chowder; and lastly, going to the Newport Folk Festival. - Jillian
Take the ferry to Block Island (best Bloody Mary) and walk the beach out to the North Light! Go a little further down the path to Sandy Point for an amazing view, which can include four states on a clear day. Then treat yourself to some oysters and Fuego Margarita on the Spring House Hotel lawn. - Lauren
A Newport harbor cruise is a must! A morning mimosa lighthouse tour and a sunset champagne sail are fantastic, too - you really can’t go wrong with either … or both!
- Lindsay
You have to check out the 4th of July parades – Bristol is the oldest continuous 4th of July parade in the country. It’s hard to get to, and is packed, but you have to go at least once. To get the true Rhode Island 4th of July experience, visit the Ancient and Horribles Parade in Glocester – it is definitely different than anything you have ever seen before and the contrast with the pomp and circumstance of Bristol makes it even more fun and worth the trip. - Seth
This is a great list – summer can’t get here soon enough!
