WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOMS

5th Grade

Getting Started Great start to the year! We've learned schedules, routines, and lock combinations.

Social Studies Started our geography unit! Exploring continents, oceans, and using cardinal directions to locate places on maps.

Science Kicked off with schoolyard observations! Now investigating nurse logs through pictures, videos, and hands-on observations. Students are asking questions to understand this natural phenomenon!

6th Grade

Students in grade 6 are transitioning well from summer to their fall routines of school and after school activities. In social studies students created theme based islands to reinforce geography skills in preparation for their future units on Ancient Civilizations.

The sixth graders will be finishing up their first Open Sci Ed unit on Light and Matter where they have journaled and participated in related hands-on activities. You might see a reading book titled "Restart" written by Gordon Korman in your child's backpack as part of their first unit in ELA. In closing all students are in the middle of their first unit on Geometry.

We look forward to seeing you at Open House on September 30th from 6-7:30.

8th Grade

PE & WELLNESS

In PE, the students are starting to wrap up fall fitness testing. They all did awesome and were extra incentivized by trying to meet Presidential Fitness levels. The wall of fame for fitness testing is outside the gym doors in the glass case. Next up is softball!

In Wellness the students have been enjoying outdoor walks and off campus hikes. In Team sports the kids are mastering the game of spike ball.

ART

Grade 5/6

Art classes are working on a Creative Pinch Pot. Students are now building their pinch pots out of clay. Students learned how to slip and score to connect pieces of clay. Some pieces have now been bisque fired, so students are learning about sanding and glazing their art prior to its final glaze firing. Students who are waiting for their projects to be bisque fired, are working on design sheets for their next project, a clay sculpture.

Grade 7/8

Art classes are beginning to design flower blow-ups, after viewing the flower paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe. Currently, students began the rough draft and will explore the colors they see in oil pastels. Students recently completed a color wheel and an Overlapping Shapes project to learn more about color mixing using primary colors to create secondary and tertiary/intermediate colors. Students also learned about analogous colors and complementary colors, prior to beginning their draft flower drawing. The final draft will be transferred onto a final paper and completed in oil pastels using a layering method.

TWEEN TIPS

Fidgets as Focus Tools: What Parents of Tweens Should Know

If your tween or teen uses a fidget at school—or is asking to use one—it can be helpful to think of it as a possible self-regulation tool, rather than automatically as a toy. Research on movement, sensory input, and attention suggests that small, purposeful actions can help some students manage restlessness or sustain attention, particularly when the tool is matched to the student and used without interrupting learning. However, fidgets are not universally helpful: for some students, certain items can compete with instruction and become a source of distraction instead. EDUTOPIA
