Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with an IRS request for a web-based solution to support audits of intercompany intangible property and service transactions, with a focus on identifying relationships between companies that might lead to preferential pricing arrangements.

In other data news, on December 10th, The Record published an article entitled Senators want to block data brokers from selling health and location data. In this story, Suzanne Smalley describes Senate Democrats' efforts to prohibit data brokers from selling health and location data. The proposed legislation aims to address privacy concerns in the largely unregulated $200 billion data broker industry by allowing lawsuits and protecting individuals from potential misuse of personal information.

  • That bill would bar data brokers from engaging in unfair or deceptive business practices, create a federal registry to track brokers, give consumers new mechanisms to request brokers not collect their data and require brokers to disclose who they share data with and explain why it is being shared.”
