Meet Susan Lawless, Halifax's New COA Director
Hello! It is my pleasure to introduce myself as the new Council on Aging Director (COA) for the Town of Halifax! I will have been in this role for a little over a month. This has been a busy and exciting time. During this time, I have had the opportunity to meet and talk to many of you and I learned about and attended a few of the COA programs. I was thrilled to see the joy and friendship that everyone has created through these activities. You are all making the best of the circumstances surrounding the facility and I was happy to see that.
I will work hard to translate the needs of our seniors to the community. I am confident that I can work with the COA staff, volunteers and the seniors to help create a functioning facility both now and when we are able to relocate/renovate a space to offer the multitude of programs you would all enjoy.
I cannot emphasize enough how grateful I am for this opportunity. Thank you to everyone who has welcomed me so warmly! I look forward to meeting more of you, getting to know each other and hearing your feedback on what we are doing well and what we can do better. My door, email and phone line are always open.
Sincerely, Susan Lawless

Historical Tidbit:
Halifax Police Department
|
Our first constable, Thomas F. Harlow, was appointed in 1901 and severed in that position for 13 years, being paid the same $10.00 a year salary each year.
In 1910 the first mention of officers other than Thomas E. Harlow were John W. Doherty, E. Lawrence Grover and William L. Robertson with them all being paid for court expenses and being at the Monponsett. (They might have been a paid detail at the Monponsett Hotel.) As the summer crowd would outnumber the year round residents, extra help would have become necessary. As seen in 1911 as we appropriated $300.00 to build a “lockup”.
The expenses were as follows:
L. M. Ham & Co., grating, cell doors and locks, $63.50
B. B. Waterman, brick, 48.00
John Foster Co., lumber, 4.45
Simeon Thompson, laying stone, 28.00
G. W. Mann, pipe for lockup, 6.41
Frank C. Woodward, mason work, 96.90
Jared J. Baker, iron work on lockup, 2.75
E. Laurence Grover, work and material found, 32.90
William Leavens, furnishings for lockup, 23.25
John Foster Co., window, 1.20
G. W. Mann, stove, 5.50
TOTAL $312.86
Overdrawn
$12.86
|
The “lockup” was built in the cellar of the #1 Schoolhouse. It was sitting across the street from where the Brockton Store sits today being used as the Fire Station. The Halifax Historical Society has original iron bars that were used to cover a window.

Come to the Next Halifax Elementary School
Parent Teacher Organization Meeting
Wed, Feb 12th
6:30p
All Purpose Room (APR) of HES
At the first PTO meeting of 2020: "we only had 2 parents out of 588 students at the school come (excluding board and school committee members). We did a survey last year asking what day and time was preferred and that is why we have all meetings on a Wednesday at 6:30 pm this year. We had more teachers and admin that came back after working all day as well, than families. Every family is part of the PTO if you have a child at HES. This is an excellent opportunity to hear what is going on in the school, get updates from school committee and help spend money that is being raised for our students. Please mark your calendar now and come to the next meeting. We don’t bite!" Re-posted from

Buzzing Forward
Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”~ Rob Siltanen
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ~ Margaret Mead
“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.”
~ Albert Einstein
