June 6, 2025

This week’s Vitals is 1,283 words or a 5 min read. If you only have 1 minute, here are the highlights:

  • AI Scribe Webinar Recap: We have a recap of our special webinar on AI Scribes, including key take-aways and resources to get you started. For Primary Care Physicians, remember Canada Health Infoway will launch a free trial program on June 10 at 9 a.m.
  • Help Finetune Summer ER Forecast: If you work in an ER or urgent care centre, we need your feedback to help us improve the accuracy of our forecasts for summer operations, and what is needed to help stabilize services in rural communities and in Winnipeg. Three minutes is all it takes!
  • U.S. Physician Recruitment Progress: We’re encouraged to see our advocacy work lead to new actions from the Manitoba government and CPSM to boost U.S. recruitment, actions we commend! Our President Dr. Nichelle Desilets is on a media tour this week highlighting why these initiatives will help reduce our physician shortage.
  • CPD Claims Deadline Approaching: June 30 is the last day to submit any continuing professional development expenses you incurred in 2024 for our CPD Rebate.
  • Wildfire and Measles Updates: Several updates this week on both of these issues affecting the public’s health and well-being. We continue to accept names from doctors offering clinical help for the wildfire response.
  • Bombers Tickets Giveaway: Members have a chance to win two free tickets to the season opener on June 12 - see below!

There’s lots more below, including details on a special pit stop for Bike to Work week next week. Plus, info about a special member family event at the Zoo in July.

TOP STORIES

01

AI Scribe Webinar Recap

Get the key take-aways and key resources from our special webinar earlier this week on AI Scribes. Over 200 have tuned in, with 92% recommending the webinar to colleagues. This relatively new technology has tremendous potential to cut down your administrative burden for all physicians, and Doctors Manitoba is helping you with resources and information to help get you started.

Help Finetune Summer ER Forecast

We are asking for your help to improve the accuracy of our summer forecasts for each ER and Urgent Care Centre. Summer is a challenging time when it comes to maintaining ER coverage and service in Manitoba, in both rural communities and in Winnipeg.

Your feedback will help with our public awareness messaging about ER services, as well as our advocacy to work with health system leaders to improve coverage in a safe and stable manner.

The health system has already attempted to employ some new measures in hopes of improving coverage, including inviting past ER physicians back to pick up shifts, and making it easier for existing ER physicians to have their privileges recognized in other hospitals. However, some hospitals that have traditionally had reliable 24/7 service in their ER or Urgent Care are struggling to achieve full physician coverage.

If you work in an ER or urgent care centre, please take this 3-minute survey to help us understand the situation in the hospital(s) you work in.

03

U.S. Recruitment Progress

More news this week on efforts to recruit American physicians to Manitoba. Doctors Manitoba started our advocacy last fall, and we’re encouraged by the actions taken this week by CPSM and the provincial government, following our earlier recommendations. We’ve been busy getting the message out there locally and south of the border. We’re seeing more interest from U.S. physicians thanks to all this work.

OTHER UPDATES

CPD Rebate Deadline Approaching

If you incurred any expenses in 2024 related to your continuing professional development (CPD), you have until June 30, 2025, to submit the expense for a CPD Rebate.

We introduced the new Claim-As-You-Learn CPD Rebate last year for all fully licensed physicians. This new rebate has resulted in an easier way to claim expenses and faster payments, kind of like a health spending account for CPD.

🗓️ You have until June 30, 2025 to claim 2024 expenses.

➡️ Log in to our DRMB Portal to access Claim-As-You-Learn

When you log in, you can view your current CPD bank. You’ll find shorter claim forms with simpler rules and no need to upload receipts or certificates (but keep them in case of an audit).

Remember, you don’t need to wait to claim 2025 expenses. Claim-as-you-learn means you can submit expenses during the year, and not wait until next year. You can use the same link above to claim current expenses.

Bike to Work Week!

Next week is Bike Week in Winnipeg! Physicians, medical students and residents are invited to visit a Bike Week Pit Stop on Tuesday, June 10, from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The Manitoba Chapter of Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE MB) is hosting two Pit Stops as part of Bike to Work day:

  • Bannatyne Campus (on sidewalk outside the Rady Faculty of Medicine Atrium entrance)
  • Warsaw Avenue between Hugo and Daly Streets

There will be an all-day Pit Stop at The Forks sponsored by MPI Bike Winnipeg from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a group bike ride through Assiniboine Park from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. For an interactive map of all the Pit Stops and more information, see the Bike Week page.

Wildfire Update

The Manitoba Wildfire Service continues to respond to 27 active wildfires across the province, a total of 111 wildfires to date, above the average for this date of 95 total fires. The province estimates more than 17,000 Manitobans have become evacuees due to the fires.

Our Doctors Manitoba Wildfires page is updated regularly with info curated for physicians. The Manitoba government has launched a new web portal, MB Ready, to provide the latest information on wildfires, natural disasters, and other public safety hazards.

→ If you can contribute any clinical time for evacuees across Manitoba, click here to share your info. Thank you to the 20+ physicians who have already signed up.

DRMB Rural Outreach Trip Postponed

Please note Doctors Manitoba has postponed our scheduled outreach visit next week to Dauphin and surrounding communities due to the wildfire situation.  We wanted to take pressure off of physicians and free up hotel space during this provincial state of emergency. Stay tuned for new dates and feel free to contact us at practiceadvice@doctorsmanitoba.ca anytime.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Here are the most-read and important recent stories, in case you missed them:

  • Help Promote the OurCare Survey: There are at least 6.5 million people in Canada who do not have access to a family doctor, and here at home in Manitoba, we have the lowest number of family physicians per capita. OurCare, in partnership with the CMA, is calling on all Canadians, especially in Manitoba, to participate in a new survey that aims to gather feedback on patient experiences with primary care. We encourage you to suggest this survey to patients, because a stronger response rate for Manitoba will only help to fuel our advocacy to support and strengthen physicians and, in turn, your patients. Patients can visit ourcare.ca/survey to take the survey.
  • CCMB Survey: CancerCare Manitoba’s CervixCheck program is working to transition from primary Pap testing to primary HPV testing for cervical cancer screening. As part of the transition, CCMB is considering providing direct referral to colposcopy for patients. Take the survey.
  • Let’s Par-Tee! The Doctors Manitoba Getting Healthy Golf Tournament is planned for Tuesday, September 2, at Southwood Golf & Country Club. Find out more and register yourself or a team today!
