August 28, 2026

Hello Friends & Neighbors,

I am grateful to be able to reach you through this medium.

Community engagement is at the forefront of my mission to provide resources, events, and support for our residents and businesses. My motto of "Putting You First...Keeps Us First" will continue to be my guide. I look forward to engaging with you more in the future!  Please take a look at the various events, projects, programs and share with your contacts.

September is National Preparedness Month

As we prepare to recognize National Preparedness Month this September, I encourage every resident to take a few simple steps now to protect yourself, your family, and your home.

Here in South Florida, preparedness is especially important during hurricane season. Take time to create or review your household emergency plan, know your evacuation zone, gather essential supplies, safeguard important documents, and make arrangements for children, older adults, pets, and family members with special needs.

Preparedness begins at home, but it strengthens our entire community. Broward County provides valuable information to help residents prepare before an emergency, remain informed during an event, and recover afterward.

Registration Is Now Open!

I invite Broward County residents to join me for our Free Tree Giveaway on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 8 AM to noon at Miramar Pineland Park, located at 3600 S. University Drive in Miramar. Each Broward County household may receive one free tree and choose from five available varieties: soursop, mango, June plum, sweetsop, or the native Simpson stopper. Trees will be distributed while supplies last, and proof of Broward County residency is required. Register today and help us expand Broward County’s tree canopy, strengthen our environment, and create a greener community for generations to come!

Save the Date!

I invite you to join me for the 7th Annual Black British Heritage Celebration on Saturday, October 24, 2026—an unforgettable evening honoring the achievements and contributions of the Black British community, featuring dinner, an awards presentation, and live entertainment.

Please note our new location: the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale.

Tickets are now available for $40 per person and include complimentary valet parking. Seating is limited, so purchase your tickets today.

Division Spotlight: Broward County Emergency Management

This week, I am highlighting Broward County’s Office of Emergency Management for its vital work helping residents, businesses, and visitors prepare for emergencies. The office assesses our community’s vulnerability to natural and human-caused hazards, develops response plans, and provides critical public-safety information before, during, and after an emergency.

During hurricane season, Emergency Management connects residents with important resources covering evacuation zones, shelter locations, emergency alerts, special-needs assistance, vulnerable populations, and household preparedness. As we recognize National Preparedness Month, I encourage every resident to create an emergency plan, gather essential supplies, know where to go if an evacuation is ordered, and sign up for ALERT Broward.

Preparing today can make a tremendous difference when an emergency occurs.

Be Hurricane Ready

With the busiest stretch of hurricane season typically starting mid-August, now is a good time to remind residents and businesses to stock up on hurricane supplies. As of July 1, Florida’s disaster-preparedness sales tax holiday became a permanent year-round savings opportunity. Items that are tax-free include: smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, portable generators, batteries, insect repellant, and more. Are you Hurricane Ready?

Flashback Friday: One Year Later—$2 Million for Affordable Housing in Miramar

A little over one year ago, during the June 4, 2025, Miramar Commission meeting, I had the honor of presenting a $2 million check in Broward County funding to support Parkview at Miramar. The $31.7 million project is expected to bring 62 new affordable housing units to the community, creating greater housing opportunities for families, seniors and working residents. Having served Miramar for many years, I remain committed to ensuring the city and all of District 7 receive the resources, attention and investment they deserve.

Commission Meeting Highlight: Proposing Broward County Is Seen in the Visit Lauderdale Brand

The tourism arm of our County is branded as VisitLauderdale which unlike many other counties such as Miami-Dade, Hillsborough or Orange counties, is actually a county agency, not an independent authority. I made an argument at Thursday’s Commission Meeting to include the name of the County along with the current VisitLauderdale logo for inclusivity but also as a matter of clarity.

There were folks that thought otherwise…
