TEXTILE RECYCLING IN CALIFORNIA

Did you know Californians throw 1.2 million tons of textiles into the landfill a year?

In response to this growing waste problem, on Saturday, January 31st, the City's Materials Management Bureau hosted our first-ever textile recycling event, inviting residents to bring unwanted textiles to be recycled or remade. Funded by a CalRecycle grant and hosted in partnership with SUAY, a closed-loop recycling company in Los Angeles, the event took place at three convenient locations throughout the city: Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library, Mark Twain Neighborhood Library, and El Dorado Park West.

The event was scheduled from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., but capacity was reached at 12:30 p.m.! Over 330 residents brought over 6,000 pounds of unwanted clothing, towels, and light blankets, which were collected and transported by SUAY to be recycled or remade, diverting them from landfills.

Residents shared their enthusiasm, noting they had been holding onto their unwanted textiles and were happy about having an accessible and responsible disposal option. Overall, for a first-time event, the City successfully provided a convenient and responsible way for residents to recycle their textiles!

The event sparked conversations about being more conscious when purchasing clothing in the first place. Choosing durable, repairable, and sustainably made items can reduce waste long before recycling is needed.

SUPERSTAR CRAS

We want to recognize Sophie Meng (Fall '25), pictured left in first photo, and Meera Iyer (Spring '24), pictured back center in right photo, for their contributions to making the first-ever Recycle Your Textiles Event a success. Thanks to their efforts, every drop-off location reached capacity well before the event ended, and many attendees were asking when the next one would be. We are grateful for the hard work they brought to this event!

We also want to recognize Margarita Miller (Fall '25), pictured left in left photo, for her contributions to the success of the Recycle Your Textiles Event and for enrolling in CRA in Spanish this spring. She completed the CRA program this past fall and will be taking it again this spring in Spanish. We are excited to see the depth of knowledge she will bring to the program in both Spanish and English.

Continue the fantastic work, Superstars!

FAQs

Q: Where can I access the CRA Portal?

A: The CRA Portal is linked here.

Q: Can I access My Impact Page to report hours without going through the CRA Portal?

A: Yes! Please visit MyImpactPage.com and log in to report your hours.

Q: What if I get asked a question that is not about waste reduction, recycling, or composting?

A: At events led by us there should always be a staff member available to answer questions. If someone is asking questions unrelated to the topics we have covered in class, let the community member know you are a volunteer and please ask a staff member to answer the question. If staff is not available, please give them a business card to contact us.

Q: What if the event that I want to volunteer at is not related to waste reduction, recycling, or composting, can I still count that towards my hours?

A: Only events related to waste reduction, recycling, or composting count toward volunteer hours. Please email the Program Coordinator to get a volunteer activity approved with an organization that is not on our list of current partnerships.

Q: What should I wear when volunteering?

A: Please wear your name tag and t-shirt so that community members can easily identify you as a CRA.

Q: Are there incentives for volunteering?

A: Yes! We appreciate your time spent volunteering. We will be entering folks for a chance to win a gift pack for each milestone of hours you've completed (5,10, and on). So, if you've completed 10 hours, you get two entries.
