Hero Moment:

Grand Opening- Free with a Flair

It was Friday at 11 a.m., bitterly cold, with snow piled three feet high across most shopping centers. This was the kind of day you stayed home unless you absolutely had to go out.

And yet, NY Caffeine in East Meadow was packed wall to wall for its grand opening.

Why? One laminated flyer sent to the entire town. The message was bold, simple, and impossible to misread: ALL MENU FREE, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. No limits. No fine print.

I arrived five minutes after opening and the line was already at the door. People of all ages were shoveling themselves out, navigating snowbanks, and showing up in force. The place buzzed for the entire hour I was there. Orders flowed, tables filled, and customers lingered, enjoying genuinely excellent coffee and beautifully crafted pastries. The croissants were outstanding, and the pistachio frozen coffee was a full sugar high, but worth it.

But here’s the part that really mattered.

The flyer didn’t just say ALL MENU FREE. It also said “More than just coffee.”

That pairing is everything. It was impossibly simple, and that was genius.

“All menu free” removed friction completely. No mental math. No hesitation. Zero price triggers action. Unlimited removes doubt. Time-bound creates urgency. It's also quite unheard of.

“More than just coffee” set the expectation. It quietly signaled that this wasn’t a gimmick. It was an invitation to indulge, to stay, to experience something thoughtfully made.

And they delivered.

The father and son ran operations side by side, while two younger boys, around ten and eight, walked the room offering trays of baklava, kunafa, and other Mediterranean treats. Three generations, all in. Hospitality wasn’t an afterthought. It was the point.

From a cost perspective, this was bold. Decor, extra staff, supplies, and then roughly 1,200 coffees and 700 croissants given away in a single day. Sold at zero.

But this wasn’t a discount strategy. It was a confidence statement.

They could have spent months running ads and mailing flyers that went straight to the trash. Instead, they made one unforgettable investment. They got people to try everything, created real excitement, and let word of mouth do what ads rarely do anymore.

This wasn’t about free coffee.

It was about believing so deeply in the experience that you were willing to remove every barrier and say, come be our guest.

In my book, they got the ABCs of leadership exactly right.

They led with Authenticity. They weren’t copying anyone. This wasn’t a formula. It was theirs.

They embraced Boldness at a level most leaders wouldn’t touch. Giving away one item is safe. Giving away the entire menu, with no cap, even on opening day, is conviction.

And they showed Compassion. Not performative kindness, but real hospitality. Three generations working side by side. Owners on the floor. Kids offering trays of desserts with pride. Second and third orders from customers graciously accepted. Everyone mattered.

That’s leadership people feel.

And when leadership feels human, customers don’t just show up. They remember.

So now I’m curious. What’s the boldest move you’ve seen a company or business make to deliver an outstanding customer experience? Tell me about it, and let's rally behind great customer (and human) experience!

Go Bold

Try something genuinely bold this week.

Be willing to be scared.

Be willing to be wrong.

Be willing to fail.

Remember, No risk, No reward.

Erik Qualman on Resumes, they're going bye bye, like flip phones!

I’ve been thinking a lot about boldness lately. Not performative boldness. Real, career-shaping, convention-breaking boldness.

After writing this week's spotlight piece about a local business that literally gave away everything on opening day, I stumbled back into an email from Erik Qualman that stopped me in my tracks.

His take is simple and provocative:

The paper resume is going the way of the flip phone.

The future belongs to storytelling, not bullet points.

This short AI-powered video bio challenges one of the most entrenched norms in professional life and asks a bigger question: why are we still clinging to formats that no longer represent how people actually connect, decide, and trust?

Bold leadership isn’t about being reckless.

It’s about being willing to question defaults, test new ground, and accept the risk of being wrong in service of something better.

Whether it’s an unlimited grand opening, a nontraditional resume, or a new way of showing up, progress rarely comes from playing it safe.

If you’re curious, here’s the video that sparked it for me.

So I’ll ask this:

What’s one convention in your industry that probably needs to be challenged, but no one wants to be the first to touch?

Cold Hands...Hot Chocolate

We’ve had more snow in the Northeast this year than we’ve seen in a decade. The kind that doesn’t melt. The kind that turns into concrete if you don’t move it fast.

And every storm, you see the same pattern.

Some neighbors get out there on day one, while the snow is still light and forgiving. Others wait. They hedge. Just in case there’s more coming.

That’s what happened last week.

We got hit hard on Sunday, a day when most people were home. Netflix must’ve been calling, because hardly anyone was outside clearing snow. Except my husband. And maybe one other neighbor.

By Monday, everyone else was digging out from under 18 inches of heavy, stubborn snow.

On a walk to check in on my parents, I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos. Cars buried under snow mountains. Heads popping up from behind drifts. The aftermath.

And then I spotted my husband two blocks away, snowblower in hand, digging out six neighbors who waited too long.

Of course he was.

I married that guy. The one people look for in an emergency. The one who shows up when things get hard. All the time.

So what do I do on a day like that?

Not a snowman. Way too cold.

Not a shovel. I know my limits.

Hot chocolate.

I made a batch for everyone outside. Whipped cream. Cup holders. Two options: classic or hazelnut. Yes, it matters.

I trudged through the snow and handed them out. And let me tell you, the grins said everything. A small, unexpected kindness on a hard, cold day.

We can’t forget to be there for each other. Not just in good times, but especially in the hard ones. We were reminded of that during Covid. During Sandy. But we don’t need a crisis to practice it.

Little things are big things.

Even hot chocolate after a blizzard.

What's an act of kindness you've witnessed during hard or somewhat questionable times? Tell me about it! Would love to hear it...it helps restores faith in humanity, truly it does.
