Dear Beth El Community,

It is with mixed emotions that I am writing to inform you that Josh Laster will be resigning as Executive Director of Congregation Beth El, effective September 1, to pursue a wonderful professional opportunity. Please take the time to read his letter below.

Beth El is a strong and vibrant congregation, and we thank Josh for his hard work over the past decade in helping us get to this point. We will be establishing a search committee in the days ahead, and we know that the Executive Director role at a synagogue as dynamic as ours will generate wide interest. A synagogue with 105 years of history like Beth El is accustomed to not just dealing with change, but thriving as a result, and I remain excited and confident about Beth El’s future.

Shabbat Shalom,

Jason Whitney, President

To My Beth El Family,

When I accepted the role of Executive Director of Beth El in 2015, I knew I was joining a synagogue with a stellar reputation and a proud, long-standing history. I had a feeling that Beth El would be a good synagogue for my family, and this has been confirmed over the past decade. Beth El has become a true extension of our Jewish home, reflecting the same values and traditions we cherish in our personal lives. I love Beth El, my family loves Beth El, and we look forward to remaining part of this incredible community for many years to come.

It is with mixed emotions that I share some professional news: I have accepted the position of Executive Director at Congregation Rodeph Shalom in Philadelphia, a Reform synagogue with 1,100 member families. As someone who grew up in the Reform movement, this opportunity allows me to return to my roots and contribute to the leadership of Philadelphia’s premier Reform congregation.

I am deeply grateful for the nearly 10 years I’ve spent collaborating with exceptional clergy, staff, and lay leaders here at Beth El. I want to especially thank Rabbi Krupnick, Rabbi Englander, Hazzan Pomerantz-Boro, Lauren Soll, David Backal, Karen Schlessel, Stuart Sauer, Faye Shapiro, and Jason Whitney for standing alongside me throughout this journey. Together, we have accomplished so much, and I take great pride in what we’ve built. I leave confident that Beth El is well-positioned for continued success.

There will be more time in the coming months to thank the many people who have made my time here so meaningful. In the meantime, I look forward to supporting a smooth and successful transition as the search begins for Beth El’s next Executive Director.

To answer some of the most common questions:

  • I will remain in my role at Beth El through the end of August.
  • My family will continue to live in Cherry Hill.
  • We will remain proud members of Beth El and look forward to staying connected to this special community.

With sincere gratitude,

Josh Laster, Executive Director

Congregation Beth El
