THANKSGIVING DAY
Thanksgiving Day is observed each year in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November. The observance is a time when families and friends gather and give thanks for many reasons, each often as different as each person who gathers around the table.
In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that many acknowledge today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. However, it wasn’t until 1863, amid the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

LSU Women's Basketball
NASSAU, Bahamas – In its first ranked matchup of the season, No. 7 LSU (8-0) remained undefeated and took down No. 20 NC State (4-3), 82-65, to win the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship.
“It’s hard to focus this time of year and I thought the two games we played here told us a little bit more about ourselves,” said Coach Kim Mulkey who earned her 99th victory as LSU’s head coach Wednesday; She will go for 100 on Sunday when LSU hosts NC State. “It helped us get better. We’re ready to be home and enjoy our day off for Thanksgiving tomorrow and then get ready for Sunday.”
After shooting a season-low 33-percent from the field in Monday’s win over Washington, LSU was hot in the championship game at 53-percent, including a 7-14 performance from beyond the arc.
“This game will humble you one minute and then it will be the highest of highs the next minute,” Coach Mulkey said. “It wasn’t any different – just one of those nights.”
Aneesah Morrow earned her sixth consecutive double-double of the season with a 20 point, 15 rebound outing, earning Pink Flamingo Championship MVP honors. Kailyn Gilbert, who made LSU’s game-winner Monday against Washington, had 12 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists Wednesday and earned All-Tournament honors.
“She (Morrow) plays with a motor,” Coach Mulkey said. “She never stops hustling. She never stops rebounding. She never stops just going hard.”
Mikaylah Williams bounced back after not scoring on Monday. Against NC State she had a game-high 24 points on 7-14 shooting (4-7 3FG).
Shayeann Day-Wilson tied a career-high with 9 assists on the day to match her career-high and set a season-high for the Tigers. Flau’jae Johnson added 16 points on 5-7 shooting to continue her impressive junior campaign.
Saniya Rivers led NC State in the contest with 21 points on 8-19 shooting and added 2 assists.
LSU was dominant on the board, outrebounding NC State by 20. The Tigers also won the game on the inside with a 28-18 edge on points in the paint.
The Tigers are back home on Sunday to face NC Central for the annual autograph game.

The ritual known today as birkat hachodesh, “the blessing of the new moon,” is widely observed in synagogues throughout the world. On the last Shabbat of the Hebrew month, the cantor stands with the Torah scroll in his arms, and announces the day of the coming week on which the New Moon, Rosh Chodesh, will fall. The announcement is preceded and followed by particularly melodious prayers for a blessed month.
This ritual is a post-Talmud ic custom with little halakhic [Jewish law] significance. Its purpose is to make sure that those members of the congregation who attended synagogue services on Shabbat only would know when this minor festival falls, so that they could add the appropriate supplements in their home prayers (Shibbolei Haleket 170).
A similar announcement is made in Sephardic synagogues on the Shabbat before a minor fast, out of concern that otherwise the congregants will not remember to. The announcement of the New Moon, far from signifying the importance of the Rosh Chodesh festival, in effect reflects a fear that the festival is not significant enough to be remembered and observed.
Outdoors Prayer
However, the very same term, “birkat hachodesh,” is used in the Talmud to designate a very different ritual–a blessing praising God for the new moon, recited outdoors while gazing at the waxing moon at the beginning of the month (Sanhedrin 41b). This ritual, with which many Jews, even those who attend synagogue services regularly, are unfamiliar, is an actual rabbinic commandment, required by the Talmud.
The Shulhan Arukh (Orah Hayyim 426) and other post-Talmudic authorities refer to this ritual as birkat halevanah, “the blessing of the moon,” but today it is often designated by the misnomer kiddush levanah, “the sanctification of the moon,” a term that sounds almost pagan. (This phrase is apparently a conflation of the term birkat halevanah with the talmudic term kiddush hachodesh, “the sanctification of the new moon,” which referred to yet a third concept, the proclamation of the New Moon by the authorities on the day of its sighting, an act by which Israel did in fact sanctify the dates of the holidays that are dependent upon the lunar month.)
The Blessing
In fact, it is not the moon that is blessed or sanctified in birkat hachodesh or birkat halevanah, but God who is praised for renewing the moon, with the following blessing (Sanhedrin 42a):
“Praised are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who created (bara’) the skies with his word, and all heaven’s host with the breath of his mouth. He gave them appointed times and roles, and they never miss their cues, doing their Creator’s (konam) bidding with gladness and joy. He is the true creator (po’el) who acts faithfully, and he has told the moon to renew itself. It is a beautiful crown for the people carried by God from birth (Israel), who will likewise be renewed in the future in order to proclaim the beauty of their creator (yotsram) for his glorious majesty. Praised are you, O Lord, who renews new moons.”
Halakhah seldom provides this kind of opportunity to praise God so explicitly for creation outdoors, in the presence of nature itself, and rarely do we find a prayer so overflowing with poetry, joy and beauty. We call God borei, koneh, poel, and yotser–four synonyms for “creator.” The celestial bodies are joyous and happy, the moon is beautiful, and God is proclaimed beautiful, glorious, and majestic. Contrast this with the daily blessing for the rising sun, usually recited indoors, which is filled with talk of the splendor of angels, the magnitude of creation, and the awe of God, but says little about beauty, joy, or happiness.
The Moon & Israel
Aside from the natural beauty of the moon and the night sky, there is another reason that abundant joy and beauty are associated with the moon, a reason alluded to in the blessing itself: The moon is our crown, our alter ego. The people of Israel identify with the moon. Its constant change is reminiscent of our destiny, and its renewal symbolizes our hope. As the moon reappears to face its creator monthly, so Israel renews itself spiritually in greeting the Shekhinah [the presence of God]. These ideas are made explicit in rabbinic statements about the ritual, cited in the Talmud (Sanhedrin 42b):
“Said Rabbi Aha bar Hanina in the name of Rabbi Asi in the name of Rabbi Yohanan: Reciting the blessing over the moon at the proper time is like greeting the Shekhinah personally… It was taught in the school of Rabbi Ishmael: If the Israelites were privileged to greet their father in heaven once a month, that would be enough for them. Said Abaye: Therefore we should say the blessing standing up (as though greeting God). Meremar and Mar Zutra went so far as to climb up on one another’s shoulders while saying the blessing.”
Praising God While Experiencing Creation
What is religion in general about, if not feeling God’s presence while experiencing his creation? And what additional components are more crucial in Jewish religion than symbolic identification with the vicissitudes of Jewish history, and our individual and collective hopes for renewal? The requirement to bless the moon upon sighting it early in the month combines all of these ideas and emotions, and one would think that it would be one of the most widely observed Jewish rituals. How then did it fall into disuse?
The blessing may be recited either by an individual or in a communal setting, any time that the moon is visible and waxing–in other words, until the middle of the month (some say the blessing should not be recited before the third or seventh day of the month; see Shulhan Arukh Orah Hayyim 426:4 and commentaries ad loc.). However, by custom, the blessing is recited publicly after synagogue services and havdalah [the prayer to conclude Shabbat] on the first Saturday night of the Hebrew month (except in Tishrei and Av, when the communal recitation of the blessing takes place immediately following the fasts of Yom Kippur and Tisha B’av, respectively).
The members of the community go outside, recite the blessing cited above from the Talmud and some additional verses, and greet one another with the phrases “Shalom Aleikhem” [Peace unto you] and David Melekh Yisrael Hai Vekayam [David, King of Israel, lives forever]. Tractate Soferim, an extra-canonical post-Talmudic work, explains that the blessing ought to be recited on Saturday night, when we are still finely dressed and perfumed from Shabbat (Soferim 19:10).
It seems that recitation specifically on Saturday night is an example of a custom originally designed to encourage the fulfillment of a commandment, which has become a hindrance. Saturday night services were once well attended, and thus the community as a whole performed the ritual on that occasion, lest individuals forget to recite the blessing alone on another night. The problem is that once Saturday night recitation became standard, those who did not attend Saturday night services did recite the blessing at all. In places where Saturday night services are sparsely attended or non-existent, the people “carried by God from birth” do not even have the privilege of greeting their heavenly parent once a month.
That is unfortunate. Not all contemporary Jews find sufficient religious inspiration in the cantor’s birkat hachodesh or other synagogue rituals, but it may very well be that the original birkat hachodesh–a monthly encounter with the divine presence–would in fact “be enough for them,” as was taught in the school of Rabbi Ishmael. They can renew their spirit each month outdoors–alone, or riding on a friend’s shoulder, or with a minyan [prayer quorum]; on Saturday night or any other night in the first half of the month–and commune with God and nature, or contemplate the vicissitudes of life or the destiny of Israel, while gazing at the moon and praising God for its renewal.

NATIONAL FRENCH TOAST DAY
Each year on November 28th, people across the United States enjoy National French Toast Day. Also known as eggy bread or omelet bread, it makes a great breakfast for guests or part of a brunch.
Home cooks and professionals alike whip up a few personal favorites when it comes to french toast recipes. The base consists of eggs and milk whisked together. Bread is dipped into the mixture and fried until golden. Many people also add some sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon to the base.
The flavor of French toast can be brightened with a squeeze of fresh orange or stuffed with sauteed apples and cinnamon. Make French toast kid-friendly by cutting it into sticks. Then dip the sticks into syrup. Substitute sugary syrup with a fruit puree and fresh fruit pieces. Nuts and seeds add crunch to this delicious breakfast fare, and don't forget the whipped cream! Just a dollop goes a long way.

At that stroke of midnight on November 21, 2024, oenophiles all over France will begin their jubilant celebration in honor of the end of the harvest and the uncorking of the Beaujolais Nouveau. Hundreds of events throughout France will be held with fireworks, music, and, of course, tastings, as “tout le monde” vie to sample the current batch of Beaujolais Nouveau - light, fruit-driven wines made with barely fermented Gamay grapes that are best consumed as soon as possible - literally. But, never fear, there are 3 different quality levels of Beaujolais above Nouveau and these are the ones we get excited about!
The entry-level wines that are simply labeled Beaujolais, are made from grapes grown throughout the Beaujolais region, mainly in the south. These also tend to be on the fruit-forward side and are meant to be enjoyed in the first year or two after the vintage. Beaujolais-Villages wines are based on Gamay grapes that were grown in the northern part of the Beaujolais region, specifically 38 permitted villages. And Cru Beaujolais are grown in any of ten specific northern locales whose typically granitic soils (though they are far from uniform in composition and character) can produce the most age-worthy and complex of all red wines from Beaujolais. So, needless to say, the least expensive wines generally come from the south, and the more expensive and age-worthy wines come from the north. And if this was all you learned about Beaujolais, you’d know enough to dive in and start learning by tasting - but as always goes with wine, a lot of the fun is in the details.
We are here to help with those details as we taste different wines from the 3 categories and talk about the terroir that makes them special. What is Beaujolais Blanc? What is the difference between a village-level wine and a cru? What's the stylistic difference between one Cru and another?? David Sobiesk will present as we learn about one of our favorite regions and pick out some of the best wines ever to pair with your holiday meals! The event is sold out but you can join our waitlist here, Gamay

Welcome to the home of the Norco Civic Association Christmas Parade -- the Greatest Show on Asphalt! (There is also a very nice Christmas parade in Norco, California. This is not it!)
The Norco Christmas Parade rolls the first Sunday of every December to usher in the holiday season to the River Parishes. The theme of this year's parade is "Norco Noel: Santa Goes to the Olympics!"
The original parade ran from the 1950s through the 1980s before it was discontinued. In 2001, a group of residents, including Norco native Stephen Weber, revived the parade. It has rolled almost every year since with a variety of themes. We had to cancel twice for inclement weather, once because of the Covid-19 pandemic and, in 2021, because of damage to our town from Hurricane Ida.
Our parade has grown to nearly 70 entries, including floats, trucks, cars, pageant queens, civic groups, schools, dancing groups and marching bands. We have welcomed the 610 Stompers, the St. Augustine Marching 100, Boudreaux and Clothilde, and the U.S. Navy band as we have celebrated music and movies, River Parishes traditions, Veterans, the Super Bowl, elections and first responders.
The old Norco Christmas parade rolls on River Road.
The parade begins at 1 p.m. at River Road and Apple Street, travels east to Good Hope Street, turns north on Sixth Street, then travels south on Apple Street and disbands at River Road. After the parade, Santa will be available to take FREE photos at the Community Christmas tree, located at the Veterans Memorial on Apple Street.
Parade participants are strongly encouraged to incorporate the overall theme of the parade in floats, costumes, and decorations. Each participant must submit an entry form and an entry fee of $50. Vehicles must provide proof of insurance.

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,December 2
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Narcan training sessions will include free Narcan for all participants, while Stop the Bleed training will cover essential skills for managing bleeding emergencies. As an extra incentive to participate, The Broadside will offer free movie tickets to a screening at the Broad Theater for the first 15 attendees at each of their hosted sessions.

New Orleans holiday parade 2024 will fill the streets with hot-air balloons. See the details.
Children's Hospital sponsors this procession, featuring Frosty, Rudolph and more.

For the third year, the Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade will get the yuletide season rolling, Crescent City style. With 30 themed floats, ridden by costumers tossing a blizzard of throws, plus 27 bands and marching groups, the parade is like a preview of Carnival. But there’s a difference.
No other New Orleans procession includes giant lighter-than-air balloons, bobbing along the route amid the other attractions. In the past two years, a 40-foot Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, a gargantuan candy cane, a snowflake, a gingerbread man, a Hanukkah ornament and Frosty the Snowman have floated over the crowds.
This year, parade producer Barry Kern promises there will be a few new balloons in the mix. In addition to floats bearing a red toy train, a Christmas alligator and Santa on his sled, Kern said parade-goers should look for giant self-propelled snow globes this year.
The parade rolls through the French Quarter and the Central Business District at 11 a.m. on Dec. 7.
Patients at Children’s Hospital are creating custom-decorated plastic ornaments that will serve as signature throws this year. Each ornament will be marked with the patient’s name.
Rolling fundraiser
Unlike the Mardi Gras season, during which commercial advertising is prohibited, the floats in the holiday parade are sponsored by businesses and organizations. All proceeds from the commercial tie-ins benefit Children’s Hospital. WDSU television plans a telethon-style broadcast to accompany the event.
With support from the state’s Explore Louisiana tourism campaign, the parade is meant to help promote New Orleans as a holiday season destination, according to parade organizers.
Grinchy power lines and rain
The first two Children’s Hospital Holiday Parades succeeded despite complications. During the first parade, the hovering balloons were forced to limbo beneath streetcar power lines on St. Charles Avenue, slowing the procession. The problem led to a new route in the second year. Rain pelted the 2023 parade, though the event still drew crowds.
Unlike in past years, there will be no post-parade party in Lafayette Square.
The parade will line up on Elysian Fields Avenue near Washington Square Park. It will proceed uptown on North Peters Street, merge onto Decatur Street, turn right on Canal Street, U-turn at Burgundy Street, turn right on Tchoupitoulas Street, ending at Andrew Higgins Drive.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
