CALIFORNIA AND LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHORTEN ISOLATION AND QUARANTINE PERIODS FOR WORKERS

(COVID-19 Update)

Some good news for employers has come from the State’s Department of Public Health and the Los Angeles County Health Department. Both agencies have revised and shortened their isolation and quarantine requirements for employees. For your convenience, the updated State guidance is available here and the L.A. County guidance is available here

Below we have a convenient chart showing the most current isolation and quarantine timelines for workplaces. Please note that healthcare personnel are subject to separate quarantine and isolation timelines.

Persons Who Test Positive

for COVID-19 (Isolation)

Recommended Action

Everyone regardless of your vaccination status, previous infection or lack of symptoms

......................................................

..

Isolation may end after Day 5 (Day 1 is the first full day after symptoms develop or, if asymptomatic, the first full day after the positive test was taken) if the following occur:

  1. The employee receives a negative COVID viral test taken on Day 5 or later;
  2. The employee is asymptomatic or symptoms are improving;
  3. The employee has no fever; * and
  4. The employee wears a well-fitting mask** around others for a total of 10 days.

Isolation may end after Day 10 if the following occur:

  1. The employee is asymptomatic or symptoms are improving; and
  2. The employee has no fever*

*In L.A County, must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine.

**In L.A. County, must wear a medical grade mask

Persons Who are Exposed to Someone with COVID-19

Recommended Action

Fully vaccinated and boosted (or not booster eligible)

Do not need to quarantine at all if asymptomatic.

Fully vaccinated and booster eligible but have not taken the booster.

......................................................

Does not need to quarantine and may come to work, if the following occur:

  1. The employee is asymptomatic
  2. The employee takes and receives a negative COVID viral test taken within 3-5 days after last close contact; and
  3. The employee wears a well-fitting mask around others for a total of 10 days.*

While persons in this situation may continue to go to work, they are supposed to quarantine outside of the workplace for a full 10 days.

*In L.A. County, must wear a medical grade mask.

Unvaccinated or Partially Vaccinated

Must quarantine for a minimum of 5 days. Quarantine may end after Day 5 (Day 1 is the first full day after the last close contact) if the following occur:

  1. The employee is asymptomatic;
  2. The employee receives a negative COVID viral test taken on Day 5 or later; and
  3. The employee wears a well-fitting mask around others for a total of 10 days.*

Quarantine can end after Day 10 if the person does not get tested and is asymptomatic.

*In L.A. County, must wear a medical grade mask.
