THE HUMANE HAND:

A resource for developing careful and confident livestock handlers in meat plants.

Training Tip: Seeing Through Cattle Eyes

Cattle have different visual processing than humans, and sudden changes in light, like moving from bright daylight into a dim barn, can cause them to stop.

Using our Cattle Vision Goggles, handlers can experience this shift from the animal’s perspective. The goggles simulate how cattle perceive lighting and contrast, helping us design and manage environments that reduce stress and improve flow. Watch the video clip to see how light contrast affects cattle movement and how seeing through their eyes can lead to more humane handling.

HHI Participates in Multistate Meeting

As part of the Multistate Meeting for Security in Agriculture Annual Meeting that was hosted at UW-River Falls this September, Karly Anderson and Kurt Vogel facilitated a roundtable discussion for animal health professionals from 19 states. During this time, Anderson and Vogel emphasized the importance of animal welfare and workers' wellbeing when considering depopulation and euthanasia methods for livestock. Attendees shared their experiences and opportunities for improvement. We appreciate the sharing of knowledge from this partnership, the opportunity to share about the Humane Handling Institute, and our involvement with this session.

Robust Systematic Approach to Animal Welfare Webinar

Program Manager Ashlynn Kirk was invited to share her expertise at the Robust Systematic Approach to Humane Handling webinar hosted by the Food and Agriculture Impact Project at the University of Arkansas School of Law. She covered the basics of a humane handling plan; how the documents fit together, and how it can evolve with your business.
