From the Desk of Fr. Mike Nacius, Pastor
Prayer is to our soul what oxygen is to our lungs. Prayer forms, prayer rituals, prayer devotions, consistent prayer strengthen and guide us in our developing relationship with our Creator God. One beautiful form of prayer is Eucharistic adoration offered for parishioners and guests of St. Mary's on Wednesdays following the morning Mass, or a funeral Mass, concluding with benediction at 7:00 PM. Perhaps you come to the church on Wednesday regularly to spend some time in prayer with our Eucharistic Lord. Maybe it has been years since you have spent time in this prayer of the Church. You are invited to come to pray and meditate before our Lord in Eucharistic adoration at St. Mary's on Wednesdays if you have 10 - 15 minutes or if you can give a full hour in prayer. All are welcome to grow in faith through prayer at St. Mary's.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament flows from the sacrifice of the Mass and serves to deepen our hunger for Communion with Christ and the rest of the Church. This coming Wednesday, September 25th, we will have a special opportunity to come together before our Eucharistic Lord. On this day we will be using a monstrance blessed by St. Pope John Paul II.

It was almost 15 years ago on November 24, 2004 the late St. Pope John Paul II blessed six       monstrances for use during the Year of the Eucharist for people to pray for an increase of vocations to ordained ministry and consecrated life. The Year of the Eucharist began October 17, 2005 and concluded in October, 2006 with a world Synod of Bishops with the Eucharist as its theme. The monstrances were designated for Eucharistic adoration for vocations for each major continent or geographical area around the world as a symbol of the connection between the Eucharist and priestly vocations. The six regions given a monstrance are: North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Pacific.

A monstrance is a vessel used by the church in which the consecrated Host is exposed for veneration or Eucharistic adoration. Adoration is a prayer of appreciation of the gift of God's total presence among us in the Holy Eucharist. When we take time before the Lord, we strive amidst the busyness, distractions and challenges we face in the world of being present to Him, who is present to us. We strive to draw close to Jesus, who has drawn close to us.

This special monstrance is being used in adoration in parishes across Vicariate 1, in Lake County in our Archdiocese. Come and pray with fellow parishioners this Wednesday, September 25th at the Church of St. Mary. Utilizing a monstrance Blessed by the Holy Father for use during the Year of the Eucharist and designated for the Church in North America is a wonderful and unique opportunity for our parish. Following benediction this Wednesday, all in attendance will have the opportunity to hold the monstrance. Please bring a family member or a friend with you this Wednesday to prayer at St. Mary's.

Have you saved the date - October 4th, 2019 at the Church of St. Mary's? We have been praying the Renew My Church Prayer over the last several years at St. Mary's. We are encouraged to continue to pray this prayer for our Church, for our Renew My Church grouping with Holy Cross Parish in Deerfield and St. Patrick's Church in Lake Forest and for the Renew My Church initiative in our Archdiocese.

Beginning on October 4th parishioners of St. Mary's will be able to help parish staff and parish leadership set goals and initiatives in the parish by completing a parish survey as part of the Renew My Church process. The survey was created by Gallup for the Archdiocese of Chicago. There will be more information next week in the bulletin about this important process and survey. Have you saved the date - October 4th, 2019?

This Sunday, September 22nd the second collection is to support the Seminary system of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Thanks for your support of this collection in support of the local Church. May vocations be fostered in our homes and in our parish.

As you read this article, online or in the bulletin, know that I am praying for you and the parish in the land of the 5th Gospel, the Hold Land, Israel. I look forward to sharing the fruits of pilgrimage next weekend with you.

God bless you with hearts filled with gratitude and thanksgiving.

We need gift cards!

The Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program is running very low on gift cards. They use gift cards to purchase household items, food, toiletries, etc. for their clients (including our family, Claudina and children). St Mary's would like to help and collect gift cards for the Resettlement Program. The most useful gift cards would be for places like  Walgreens, Walmart, Target, Jewel, Aldi (all denominations welcome because a client advocate shops with the client.) In addition, they can always use  Ventra passes also (1 day, month-long, or a regular card with money loaded on to it).

You may place the gift cards in an envelope addressed to "Refugees" and deliver to the Parish Office, or place in the collection basket (by September 30th).

Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for our family and the program, especially during these challenging times!
