When threatened, it releases toxic mucus that can paralyse and kill creatures such as crabs and cockroaches. Scientists have identified toxins in its slime that could potentially inspire new insecticides in the future. Now competing for Invertebrate of the Year 2026, this bizarre but fascinating predator is getting the attention it has long been overlooked for. Check out the full story here.

The Hidden Plastic Problem Lurking in Our Food Waste

Food waste is a massive environmental problem, but new research suggests that tackling it comes with an unexpected challenge: plastic contamination. Researchers found that while diverting food waste away from landfill could dramatically reduce climate impacts, microplastics can persist through composting and potentially enter agricultural soils. In the US alone, the study estimates that as much as 20,000 tonnes of microplastics could contaminate farmland each year through compost. The findings highlight the need to address plastic contamination alongside food-waste recycling rather than treating the two problems separately. Read the full article here.

The AI Race Faces a Reality Check

US Senator Bernie Sanders is calling on leading AI companies to pause development, warning that rapidly advancing technology could create risks humans may struggle to control. His appeal targets major AI leaders, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg. Sanders points to recent incidents involving unpredictable AI behaviour and growing concerns about how powerful these systems could become. His call adds political pressure to an already heated debate over whether AI development should prioritise speed and innovation or stronger safety measures.
