Fear of the Other

"'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved."

Hymn, Amazing Grace

“What comes naturally is fear of the Other. It’s one of the ways our brains protect us. What’s not natural is to view the Other as sister or brother. Think of church as schooling in how to manage our fears; how to fear our fears getting the best of us; fearing the right things in the right way…Courage is not the absence of fear but rather having a reason for doing the right thing in spite of our fear—fearing, revering, and honoring something more than safety.”

SCAPC RHINO Ministry Featured in Presbyterian Outlook

"Stronger than the Storm: RHINO's 20-Year Legacy of Hope" is featured in this month's issue of Presbyterian Outlook! Written by SCAPC member Harriet Riley, this article traces the ministry of Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans from its origin weeks after Hurricane Katrina to its current Camp RHINO, hosting volunteers from around the country. Click here to view the article on our RHINO page!

Camp RHINO 2025 Is a Wrap!

We are grateful for the youth and their sponsors from Worthington Presbyterian Church (Worthington, OH) and Grace Presbyterian Church (Wichita, KS) who joined us this summer to Rebuild Hope In New Orleans!

40/50's Brainstorming Session

Are you in your 40's or 50's and want to connect with others? The 40/50's group offers spiritual, social, cultural, and service events for us to enjoy each other’s company and help others. Interested in helping to organize our calendar of events? Join us for a Brainstorming Session this Thursday, July 31 at 5:30 p.m. on Zoom. Visit scapc.org/40-50 or the SCAPC app events tab for the link.

Yak, Snack, & Read

The 40/50s Yak, Snack, & Read book club will meet on Tuesday, August 5 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Land Building Riverside Room for discussion, light snacks, and wine. Our book is The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. The Personal Librarian tells the story of an extraordinary woman, famous for her intellect, style, and wit, and shares the lengths she must go to—for the protection of her family and her legacy—to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives. Visit scapc.org/yak for more details.

Our next ‘Worship Short’ will be a Blessing of the Backpacks next Sunday, August 3, at 6 p.m. at Okra Abbey Community Garden on the corner of Hickory and Eagle Streets. Join us for family games and activities, dinner, and worship that includes a back-to-school backpack blessing for students. If you would like to help cook dinner, lead games, and give out school supplies to our friends and neighbors in the Carrollton Community, sign up on our volunteer webpage!

Seeking Marriage Service Assistants

In 2026, SCAPC will be able to return to having weddings in the Sanctuary. We have several weddings scheduled in 2026 and are seeking people to help the pastors assist couples during their rehearsal and wedding procession. If you are interested, we can work with you in regards to scheduling. Training for this position will be provided and you will be paid for the weddings you work. Please contact Lynn Hoffman for information.

Aden Welcomes Volunteers of All Ages!

The Aden Program for Elder Care welcomes children, youth, and adults to volunteer this summer on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Join us for arts and crafts, puzzles, games, balloon volleyball, singing, and dancing! Email Aden@scapc.org for more information and to sign up today.

Last week the participants, staff, and volunteers of the Aden Program enjoyed a festive Bastille Day celebration as well as a visit by "Miss Pepper", the bunny who belongs to Marti's daughter Mackie! Miss Pepper is pictured here with youth volunteers Savannah and Arden Weiser.
