Growing Up with iPhones: Takeaways from Our Experience

“Things we wish we’d known before getting iPhones” was the theme of an unforgettable presentation by four area high school students at the June meeting of the Westchester Families Task Force.  They cited loss of sleep, focus, free time, and social connection due to excess screen use, as well as the impact on mental health and well-being. They spoke to what kids think they’ll get from iPhones and social media and how kids can meet those needs without them. They also suggested ways to mitigate negative effects once someone has an iPhone in hand. The students, who independently conceived of this initiative, have enjoyed speaking to upper elementary and middle school students and are available to take their presentation on the road. For more info, or to invite the students to speak, contact Emily Wells at emily.b.wells@gmail.com.

“Not Anti-Tech, Pro-Child” Conversation with NYS United Teachers and Area Parents

A big audience gathered on Aug 12th in the midst of a beautiful day to hear from Melinda Person, President of NYS United Teachers, on their new resolution to scale back on screens and A.I. and center human teachers in NYS classrooms. Four local parent leaders added their voices to the conversation, offering recommendations formulated by the D2R Coalition that call for even more protections for children and an emphasis on analog teaching methods.

Does Social Media Cause Mental Health Harms? Jonathan Haidt Makes the Case

The author of The Anxious Generation contends that there is ample evidence that a causal link exists between social media and the increased levels of anxiety and depression experienced by US teenagers. In a new review of the research, Haidt cites Meta’s own internal reporting that “teens blame Instagram for an increase in the rates of anxiety and depression among teens”.
