Super Bowl Party

Although we were disappointed that our Raven's weren't in this year’s Super Bowl, that didn't stop The Baltimore Station from enjoying the festivities alongside the rest of the nation! Here at The Baltimore Station, we have used this annual sports celebration as an opportunity to impart new skills to our veterans. For the past 12 years, our Clinical Director Paul Martin, has worked with the client-led Super Bowl Committee to host the most exciting event of the year that keeps the men involved and engaged for weeks leading up to the big game.

What started as a cooking competition is now an annual tradition here. Our menu has changed over the years, but the activities and brotherhood stayed true -- coming together to cook and celebrate in a way that is fun and promotes each man’s personal journey to recovery and self-sufficiency. We hope this instills an excitement for clients to go out into their communities after graduating and host their own festivities that focus on coming together and sharing a love for food and fellowship, without the use of alcohol and/or drugs.

Clients raised money to host this Super Bowl party filled with the best food in town, a reminder to everyone that you can have whatever you want if you depend on yourself to make it happen. A menu consisting of burgers, steamed shrimp, fried fish and more was planned by the clients. We went all out and with the help from community donations and volunteers and made this day extra special for each individual in our program. A special thank you to staff members, KND Hearts, and The Baltimore Station graduate, Michael Crawford, for donating delicious dishes and supplies to help bolster up the game day menu. Even our former board member, Joey Vanoni, donated a mountain of pizza pies from his restaurant Pizza di Joey!

However you celebrated this year, we hope you all enjoyed Super Bowl 2025 and look forward to helping us cheer on the Ravens at Super Bowl 2026!

Exciting Improvements at The Baltimore Station

We are thrilled to announce a major update to our building, made possible by the incredible generosity and hard work of the volunteers from the Sparrows Point Home Depot Distribution Center! Thanks to their dedication, our reception space has been completely transformed into a more welcoming and functional area for our staff, clients, visitors, and volunteers.

Home Depot’s team of volunteers rolled up their sleeves and spent all day patching holes, painting walls, installing new flooring, and updating a few other areas in the building. The front desk area now includes new wood laminate flooring, a fresh coat of paint, and a brand-new TV monitor mounted on the wall, which we have wanted for a very longtime. The monitor will be used to share resources and the daily schedule with our clients while also highlighting some of our amazing volunteer groups! The new design ensures that everyone who walks through our doors feels greeted and supported from the moment they arrive.

This project is a perfect example of how community partnerships can have a lasting impact. The Home Depot team not only helped to beautify the entryway but also gave it a professional look for welcoming first-time visitors. With their expertise and attention to detail, they’ve created a space that is both beautiful and practical.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the Home Depot volunteers for their time, effort, and the skills they brought to this project. Their support has truly made a difference, and we look forward to welcoming all of you into our newly updated reception area!

Celebrating Black History Month: Honoring the Legacy and Service of Black Soldiers

As we observe Black History Month, The Baltimore Station would like to take a moment to recognize and celebrate some of the many contributions of Black veterans who have served our nation with courage, dedication, and resilience. As an organization dedicated to supporting and uplifting veterans, it is important to reflect on past accomplishments of our brothers in arms before us. Their stories are a powerful testament to the strength, sacrifice, and impact of Black Americans in the armed forces.

The Tuskegee Airmen: Trailblazers in the Sky

The Tuskegee Airmen were not only trailblazers in the skies but also symbols of resilience and excellence. Despite enduring racism and skepticism about their abilities, they proved themselves as exceptional pilots, earning a reputation for their skill and courage. Flying missions in World War II, these men became known for their unmatched record of escorting bombers to safety. The Tuskegee Airmen's achievements were instrumental in breaking down the racial barriers that existed within the military and the nation. Their success helped lead to the eventual integration of the U.S. Armed Forces, making their contributions not just historic in military terms, but transformative in the fight for civil rights. The legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen continues to inspire future generations to pursue careers in aviation and beyond, reminding us all of the power of perseverance in the face of adversity. (Source)

The Buffalo Soldiers: Bravery in the West

The Buffalo Soldiers were the first Black soldiers to serve in the peacetime army after the Civil War. Established in 1866, these soldiers were tasked with a variety of roles, including protecting settlers, building infrastructure, and maintaining law and order in territories that were often dangerous and lawless. The name "Buffalo Soldiers" was given to them by Native American tribes, who admired their strength and resilience, comparing them to the powerful buffalo. Despite facing racism and prejudice, the Buffalo Soldiers made significant contributions to the military and American history, fighting in key battles, participating in the Indian Wars, and playing a critical role in the expansion of the United States. Their legacy is one of courage, perseverance, and honor, and they paved the way for future generations in the military. (Source)

Community groups like The Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club continue to honor those who were a part of the original Buffalo Solders through riding as a group and supporting the communities they live in. We are so grateful for the volunteers who have served at The Baltimore Station with The Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club of Central Maryland.

From the Revolutionary War to present-day military service, Black soldiers have been a vital part of America's defense. Despite facing systemic racism and segregation, many Black men and women answered the call to serve, often pushing back against adversity to protect the freedoms that others may take for granted. This Black History Month, let us honor the brave Black men and women who have served our country. Their stories of resilience, dedication, and sacrifice remind us that history is not just something we look back on, but something that continues to shape our present and future.
