August - New School Year, New Grant Year

It is August and that means we are about to begin another year of new beginnings and new opportunities to help students dream bigger, reach higher, and open doors to their futures. As we GEAR UP for another year, although it may be one filled with uncertainty, let's remember the purpose, the passion, and the power that fuel the work that we do!

Looking forward to another amazing year!

BLOG POST

Although our staff interviews have been very popular, this month we are featuring a blog written by Kelly Briggs, GEAR UP First Year College Advisor at Great Basin College (GBC)! You can read it here!

Year 7

August 23

August 23rd is the official start of our next and potentially last grant year, unless of course, we are granted a no-cost extension for a Year 8. We'll know more about that next summer. We've already received the Grant Award Notification (GAN) from USED, which is great news! We are just awaiting final budget approval from NDE.

#WhyApply Day

September 19th

Once again the American College Application Campaign (ACAC) will be celebrating #WhyApply Day on Friday, September 19th. On this is a day, nationwide, schools, colleges, and other college access professionals join in the fun in sharing why they applied to college or why they think their students should apply to college. Watch the GEAR UP NV social media platforms on that day to see what we have put together! There is still time to participate! Contact Janet Stake for more information.

Year 7 Kick Offs

September

Once again we will be starting off the new school year with various orientations, or Kick Offs, at the GEAR UP high schools. What is different this year, these will be home grown efforts instead of the vendors we've used previously. In addition, coming up in October, the NSHE staff will be hosting their introductory events for each school district. Stay tuned for more information on those events.

National GEAR UP Week

September 22-26

This year, National GEAR UP Week will be held the week of September 22nd. This is a great time to plan extra special events. This year, the theme from the annual conference will be carried through GEAR UP week as well. The theme is: Planting Seeds, Growing a Nation. Our high schools and colleges should be planning something special to celebrate!

Social Media

GEAR UP NV Goes to AZ!

This summer  GEAR UP ASPIRE hosted 29 high school students from Clark, Bonanza, Durango and Pahrump Valley high schools on the first ever GEAR UP out-of-state campus tour. The four-day trip included 22 seniors and 7 juniors going on the adventure to multiple college campus tours at University of Arizona (Tucson, AZ), Arizona State University (Tempe, AZ), GateWay Community College (Phoenix, AZ), Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff, AZ), and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Prescott, AZ). In addition, students participated in cultural experiences at Phoenix Art Museum and a STEM filled experience at Arizona Science Center. The students also enjoyed a  balanced time for meals, social activities, and rest. Travel was primarily by bus with structured breaks, and accommodations rotate between Tucson, Phoenix/Tempe, and Flagstaff before returning to Las Vegas. Many thanks to the many chaperones that were able to attend, including from GEAR UP, Mario Rodriguez, Jana Burd, Arlene Herrara, ASPIRE Peer Mentors Gio and Nyguen, and a couple of UNLV staff members from Admissions and Financial Aid, Irvin Guerrero-Vizcarra and JT Fehner. Thanks to all that made this trip happen!

Way to gooooo GEAR UP!

Welcome Jeannine!

We are so happy to welcome Jeannine Warner to GEAR UP Nevada! Jeannine is one of our new Educational Programs Professionals with NDE. She graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a bachelor's degree majoring in developmental psychology and went on to get her MBA from the University of Phoenix.

Welcome to the team, Jeannine!

Hello to Bryan!

We're happy to have you on board, Bryan!

NDE Fall Training

Once again the GEAR UP NV team met in Reno on the impressive and ultra cool TMCC Edison campus, to participate in our fall training leading up to the new Year 7 grant year. During the training, we completed the Dependable Strengths professional development session led by NSHE's Jana Burd, we did assorted fun team building activities, we were presented with various data culminated over the past program years, we got some fodder for our social media efforts, and we all got to meet Jeannine and Bryan!

Great job by our Program Officer, Josh Loftis for putting together the agenda for our two days together!
