Twice a month, the Jewish Federation of Ottawa shares a Shabbat greeting from a member of our Board of Directors. This Friday, we are pleased to share this personal message from Kevin Barwin.

Dear Community Members,

Sadly, this is my last community message as I conclude my eight years on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa at the upcoming AGM in June. Hence, I wanted to share a few thoughts on the road behind us, and what lies ahead.

My time on the board and as chair of the Grants and Allocations has provided valuable insight into the operations, challenges, and impact of our community organizations. I’ve seen first-hand how strategic funding decisions translate into real, measurable outcomes — from supporting youth engagement, the vulnerable, education, summer camps, and our seniors.

Although my term is ending, I plan to remain actively involved. With the Federation’s new strategic plan about to be released, we’re entering a pivotal phase that emphasizes innovation, sustainable growth, and broader engagement. This plan is designed to help us serve an increasingly diverse population while ensuring the long-term strength and inclusivity of Jewish life in Ottawa.

This work is taking place during a time of increasing antisemitism and geopolitical tension. The ongoing situation in Israel and the growing number of hate incidents here in Canada has created a challenging climate. In moments like these, organized and unified communities are essential—not only for resilience but also for advocacy. The Federation’s impact extends beyond direct funding. It helps create infrastructure for civic engagement and advocacy, especially at a time when our community needs to be both visible and heard.

This brings me to an important point: participating in Canadian democracy. With so much at stake — locally, nationally, and globally — it is critical that we all exercise our right to vote. Elections directly affect the policies and leadership that shape our communities, from education and healthcare to combating hate and promoting equality. Voting ensures our values and concerns are represented and that we have a say in the future direction of our country. So please get out and vote on Monday. (To learn more, visit the Ottawa Jewish E-Bulletin's election coverage.)

Lastly, I want to acknowledge and thank the many colleagues, volunteers, and leaders I’ve worked with over the years. Your professionalism and commitment have helped advance the Federation’s mission and strengthened our shared outcomes.

Looking forward, I am confident in the direction we’re headed. I will continue to support the work being done — both within the Federation and through broader civic participation — and I encourage others to do the same. Again, please get out and vote on Monday.

Shabbat Shalom,

Kevin Barwin,

Chair of the Grants and Allocations Committee

Member of the Board of Directors
