Call for Umpires - May & June Events

Field Hockey doesn't happen without umpires! Field Hockey BC are looking for umpires to help out at the following events in May:

·       Vancouver International Tournament (VIT) - May 18-20 @ Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West

·       Female Stage 2 and Male Evaluation Events - May 18-20 @ Tamanawis Park, Surrey

·       U18 Girls Club Championship - May 24-26 @ Tamanawis Park, Surrey

There are also six more FHBC events happening in June that require umpires. Check out our Umpire Opportunities Page for the full list of tournaments and locations.

Please contact Shaquille at eventsandofficials@fieldhockeybritishcolumbia.com as soon as possible if you are interested in umpiring at any of our events. Also note that you don't need to be available for the full tournament weekend to get involved. People with single day or partial day availability are still encouraged to put their name forward.

Provincial Program - Male Athletes

FHBC is pleased to announce that this year’s U18 Provincial Program has been extended to include U21 male athletes. Field Hockey Canada and all involved Provincial Sport Organizations (including FHBC) recently met formally to collaboratively assess and consider the competitive depth of the athlete pool across the country. The decision taken from this collaboration is to raise the age group for the U18 Male National Championship for 2024 to U21. The rationale behind this change is to maintain as meaningful environment as possible for participating athletes, whilst at the same time fostering the potential for greater provincial participation.

If you are a U21 male athlete interested in National Championship participation (July 23-28 @ Tamanawis Park), please see our Provincial Program page for the nomination and registration links. Deadline to register is May 3rd.

Provincial Program - Female Athletes

Stage 1 Evaluations for Female U16 and U18 athletes have been completed in all regions - Island, Lower Mainland, and Interior.

For those athletes selected to move forward in the evaluation process, some are currently taking part in a "Principles of Play" training program. This is an optional program for the athletes, designed to better prepare them tactically for competition/game play.

Stage 2 Evaluations are scheduled for May 18-20 at Tamanawis Park in Surrey.

Thank you to all of the Coaches and Evaluators who have contributed their time to make this process possible.

Call for Action - Community Coaches

Field Hockey BC is pleased to announce that the Society will be prioritizing support for Community Level Coaches throughout the remainder of the 2024 season (to August 31, 2024). Field Hockey BC is offering a full (100%) refund to FHBC registered participant coaches on all registration costs for the completion of the following NCCP Community Level Context and Safe Sport Coaching Courses:

  • NCCP Coach Initiation in Sport Course [Community]
  • FHC: Community Coaching Course [Community]
  • NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills Course [Community]
  • NCCP Making Ethical Decisions Course [Safe Sport Requirement]

This investment in the Community Coaching Stream is being made again this year in recognition of the need for ALL COACHES AT ALL LEVELS to meet mandatory NCCP Coach Standards which come into effect for the 2025-2026 season. For the Spring and Summer of 2024, Field Hockey BC is providing financial support to Community level coaches. We encourage all Community level coaches to please consider taking advantage of such financial support and complete formal training in a timely fashion. Please note that there are two additional required Safe Sport courses that are not listed as they are already free to all coaches.

Please note that it is very likely that the Society will look to support Competition level coaches during the 2024-2025 field hockey season and as such Community level coaches are encouraged to take advantage of this support this season! We thank both our Community level coaches and our Member Clubs for their support in advocating for formal education this year. The Society and our Member Clubs, as well as our sanctioned Leagues would not wish to be faced with a scenario come 2025-2026 where athletes are not able to enjoy a field hockey program or season due to coaches not meeting mandatory coaching standards.

For more information on the mandatory standards required of coaches, please refer to the following NCCP coach education page on the FHBC website: https://fieldhockeybc.com/coaches/coaching-education/nccp-pathway/

Field Hockey BC thanks all our Community level coaches and Member Clubs for due consideration of this polite call to action!
