What else would you call it?

Last week I was leading a webinar with a group of coaches, teaching the difference between Team Bonding, Team Building, and Team Development. As we unpacked each term, the conversation got interesting. We talked about how “Team Building” often gets a bad rap because all three of these experiences get lumped under that one label. In my mental model, team building is very different from team bonding. Yet in the marketplace, they often get marketed the same way. There is value in each. But if someone is expecting a team development process and you deliver what feels like a team bonding event, the gap between expectation and reality can be significant.

Part of the problem is the phrase itself. “Team Building” has become a catch-all term. It can mean a ropes course experience. It can mean a happy hour. It can mean a strategic planning retreat. It can mean a year-long culture transformation process. When one phrase tries to cover that much ground, it starts to lose clarity. And when clarity fades, so does perceived value. Words shape expectations. Expectations shape satisfaction.

So what else might we call it?

If the focus is skill practice and behavior change, maybe it’s a Collaboration Lab. Maybe it’s a Team Performance Workshop. Maybe it’s a Communication Intensive or a Leadership Experience. If the emphasis is alignment, perhaps it’s a Strategy Session or an Alignment Summit. If the goal is culture, maybe it’s a Culture Workshop or a Momentum Session. Each of those names signals something more specific than the broad umbrella of “team building.” Each sets a clearer tone before anyone even walks in the room.

Here’s the question I’ve been sitting with since that webinar: What category would you use instead of “Team Building”? What language better reflects the outcomes you actually deliver? Because if your work is about improving decision making, increasing accountability, strengthening communication, or elevating performance, the label should reflect that depth. When we elevate the language, we elevate the conversation. And often, we elevate the investment.

None of this means we abandon the phrase entirely. It simply means we use it more intentionally. Bonding builds connection. Building builds skills. Development builds sustained performance. When we choose language that matches the true purpose of the experience, we serve our clients better. And we protect the value of the work we care so much about.
