Case Study: How Sophos MDR Helped Prevent A Breach
Problem
In early March 2025, Ridge Support Technologies (RST), the IT services provider for a local municipality, detected suspicious activity on a server hosting a line of business application. The system, which supports critical municipal operations, was found to be vulnerable due to an unpatched version of the software which had not been addressed by the vendor. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2024-36401, allowed for potential arbitrary code execution.
The threat was first noticed when anomalous behavior was flagged by Sophos' Managed Detection and Response (MDR) platform. The Sophos MDR team immediately isolated the affected host and began a forensic investigation. The incident was classified as a medium-severity case but the potential for data compromise and operational disruption was significant.
To make things even more potentially dangerous, this occurred on a Saturday morning - no one was in the portion of the building housing this system to take notice of these issues or sound the alarm in a reasonable time.
Response
The response unfolded in several key phases:
1. Immediate Isolation and Assessment
Sophos MDR isolated the compromised server to prevent lateral movement. Analysts conducted a manual scan and confirmed no malicious persistence mechanisms were found. Suspicious files were removed from the system's temporary directories.
2. Root Cause Identification
The vulnerability was traced to an unpatched software instance. Sophos confirmed that the exploit aligned with CVE-2024-36401, which allowed attackers to execute code remotely if the server was exposed to the internet.
3. Mitigation and Patch Deployment
RST disabled public access to the the software and coordinated with the vendor to apply the latest security patches. Sophos recommended keeping the server isolated until all updates were verified. RST also ran additional scans using HitmanPro to ensure no residual threats remained.
4. Communication and Closure
After confirming the system was clean and patched, RST notified all affected parties and restored services to normal operation. Total downtime of the application (and only that single application) was limited to no more than 36 hours from threat detection to clean restoration.
Result
Thanks to the rapid detection and coordinated response enabled by Sophos MDR, the the municipality avoided a potentially damaging breach. Key outcomes included:
- No data exfiltration or encryption occurred.
- The vulnerability was patched before it could be exploited further.
- No knowledge of the issue reached the public, avoiding reputation damage entirely.
This incident also reinforced the importance of proactive monitoring. According to the 2025 Sophos Active Adversary Report, attackers can exfiltrate data within 72 hours of initial access, and the median time to breach Active Directory is just 11 hours. In this case, the dwell time was minimized to less than 24 hours, thanks to MDR's swift action.
Since the attack had occurred on a Saturday morning, it is most likely the issue would not have been addressed at all until 60 hours later in the best-case scenario had the security not been in place with monitoring 24/7.
Conclusion
This incident serves as a textbook example of how MDR services can prevent a vulnerability from becoming a full-blown breach. With Sophos MDR's layered defense and RST's responsive IT leadership, the municipalities systems remained secure and public trust was preserved.
