American Falls Reservoir
Shorebirds and More
TRIP REPORT
Saturday, September 14th six intrepid birders headed to American Falls Reservoir to check out the shorebird scene. The shoreline was not overly crowded with birds but the birds that were there gave us good opportunities to try our hand at identification. Most allowed for good long looks and great side-by-side comparisions. We saw Semipalmated Plovers foraging near Killdeer and Least Sandpipers right next to Western Sandpipers! Subtle differences in shape, size, and feeding strategy helped observers correctly identify them.

|
We were able to survey several birding hotspots, including Willow Bay Marina, the Silo area, Sterling Wildlife Management Area, Danielson Creek Falls, Springfield Bottoms, and McTucker Ponds. On our way home we did a quick sashay through the campground at Massacre Rocks, where we saw and heard Juniper Titmouse. All together we submitted 10 checklist and tallied 58 species. Despite a chilly start to our day, we had a fabulous time. Thank you Melody, Jim, Bill, Deborah, Sarah and Becky!! Here's the Link to our Trip Report on ebird: https://ebird.org/tripreport/274955

Interested in making your yard more attractive to birds and other wildlife? Prairie Falcon Audubon Society invites you to join a tour of local yards that are bird/wildlife friendly.
Each yard has unique features to attract a variety of birds and other wildlife such as hummingbirds, orioles, finches, and goldfinches as well as other year-round residents. You will see how Karl, Jan, and Sarah have incorporated native plants and sustainable gardening practices into their yards and how they created spaces that provide the four essential habitat elements – food, water, cover, and places to raise young. Hopefully you will be inspired to maintain your own yard or green space for wildlife, whether it is one bird feeder, one nest box, one wildflower bed, one bird bath/pond, or one natural area.
Make a difference for wildlife, one yard at a time! Join us for our 1st annual Bird-Friendly Yard Tour and maybe we can include your yard on our next tour!

1. Make Windows Safer, Day and Night
These simple steps save birds: On the outside of the window, install screens or break up reflections—using film, paint, or Acopian BirdSavers or other string spaced no more than two inches high or four inches wide.

2. Keep Cats Indoors
A solution that’s good for cats and birds: Save birds and keep cats healthy by keeping cats indoors or creating an outdoor “catio.” You can also train your cat to walk on a leash.

3. Reduce Lawn, Plant Natives
Add native plants, watch birds come in: Native plants add interest and beauty to your yard and neighborhood, and provide shelter and nesting areas for birds. The nectar, seeds, berries, and insects will sustain birds and diverse wildlife.

4. Avoid Pesticides
A healthy choice for you, your family, and birds: Consider purchasing organic food. Nearly 70% of produce sold in the U.S. contains pesticides. Reduce pesticides around your home and garden.

5. Drink Coffee That’s Good for Birds
Enjoy shade-grown coffee: It’s a win-win-win: it’s delicious, economically beneficial to coffee farmers, and helps more than 42 species of North American migratory songbirds that winter in coffee plantations, including orioles, warblers, and thrushes.

6. Protect Our Planet from Plastic
Reduce your plastics: Avoid single-use plastics including bags, bottles, wraps, and disposable utensils. It’s far better to choose reusable items, but if you do have disposable plastic, be sure to recycle it.

7. Watch Birds, Share What You See
