This Week at Ascension

The Twenty- First Sunday After Pentecost

Praying Together, Shaping Tomorrow

If you remember, last week I wrote about praying at night. I want to stay with that a little longer because prayer has come up several times this week, and it has made me think about how much we need that time with God.

On Tuesday, I traveled to Washington, D.C. for the monthly Diocesan Council meeting, and in my small group we talked about St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians 4:1–9, the one from last week. And Paul is encouraging them to pray, to bring their worries and requests to God, and to remember to give thanks. He tells them that the peace of God, which is beyond our understanding, will guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

I think we need to hear those words. I know I do. Sometimes we get to the end of the day with so much in our heads. We worry about people we love, things we cannot fix, and what might happen next. Then we pick up our phones, and suddenly we have even more to worry about.

Paul gives us something to practice: “bring it all to God”. We do not have to figure everything out before we pray. We can tell God what is on our hearts, even when it comes out messy or we find ourselves saying the same thing again.

Then, on Thursday, I went to Asbury to celebrate our monthly service. We were remembering Teresa of Ávila, a mystic and monastic reformer who lived in Spain in the XVI century. She was a Carmelite nun who helped renew the prayer and community life of her order. Prayer was at the center of her life, and she helped others make room for God in theirs.

What I like about Teresa is her understanding of prayer as friendship with God. I told them that it reminded me of a hymn I’ve loved since I was a kid, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” Do you know it? That idea of friendship feels like a good place for all of us to start. We spend time with someone who loves us. We talk, we listen, and sometimes we just sit together. We don’t always need many words.

And perhaps that is what we need this week: a few quiet minutes with God before we go to sleep. A moment to say thank you. A moment to pray for someone who is hurting. A moment to admit that we are tired and need help.

My hope is that this week we can put our phones down at night and spend some of that time in prayer. It is easy to focus on everything that is wrong in the world. There is real pain around us, and we can bring that pain to God while asking how we might help.

Let us do this together! Even in our own homes, we can be united in prayer as a community. Let us pray for our church, our country, and our world… for tomorrow and for the day after tomorrow, for the future we are helping to shape.

May we make prayer part of our everyday lives. And may we go to sleep remembering that God loves us, holds us, and will be with us when we wake up to begin again.

With love, Javier

GIVING CAMPAIGN 2026-7 ~ UPHOLDING EACH OTHER IN LOVE

Hello Friends,

Welcome to the  2026-7 Giving Campaign at our Church of the Ascension. This year as we consider how to support our church we can all embrace the theme, Upholding Each Other in Love. In Ephesians 4:1-2 we are called to encourage, support and take responsibility for each other in Ascension and beyond.  As the bishop shares, faith is a long-term group project and no one can do it alone. Ascension has shown many times what upholding each other looks like. How very fortunate we all are to participate and to receive.

Packets have been mailed out to all addresses on file in Realm and otherwise in the office. Please take the time to read the letter and pledge your financial support, as you are able. Every donation will be cherished and used wisely.

The packets also contain a pledge card where you can write your donation as you wish, and a return envelope. You may also fill out the card here, or use an electronic form to send to the office. Watch for further announcements on the different ways you may give and information about how our funds are used.

On behalf of the Stewardship Team, thank you for all you do for Ascension.

Please ask any of us about the campaign or talk to us about sharing why you give or how you see us Upholding Each Other in Love.

Blessings,

Avin Lalmansingh, Betsy Hasegawa, Clay Kolle, Danielle Allen, Diane Leach, Janet King, Marge Kling, Ruth Anna Skowronski

JOIN US FOR AN ELECTION EVE CANDLELIGHT BILINGUAL PRAYER VIGIL OUTSIDE THE CHURCH OF ASCENSION, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2026, AT 7:00 PM

“Loving God, guide us through this election as a nation, state, and community as we vote for people to do work on our behalf and on the behalf of our communities. Help us to vote for people and ballot initiatives that will better our community and our world so it may reflect the values Christ taught us.”  Excerpt, Prayers of the People for an Election

WE INVITE YOU TO THE PRAYER VIGIL

Join members of the Ascension Equity & Justice Committee for an Election Eve Candlelight BILINGUAL PRAYER VIGIL on the steps of the chapel in front of Ascension at 7:00 pm. We will pray together in English and Spanish for our leaders, our neighbors, and our country.

The sanctuary of the main church will be open to everyone after the vigil for silent prayer and reflection until 8:00 pm.

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO VOTE

If eligible, register to vote (or check your voter registration status).

Go to your polling place and VOTE ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, if you have not already voted early, by mail, or at a drop-off ballot box.

These nonpartisan websites can direct you to information about voting and elections in your community: Vote.org: https://www.vote.org/; U.S. Election Assistance Commission: https://www.eac.gov/.

Participating in an election is exercising the power you have to impact your community positively by participating in our collective system of governance. It is a means of carrying out the Gospel call to care for one another. Midterm voting involves determining elected officials in Congress, your state legislature, and local races such as city council, mayors, and school boards. These roles have a great impact on your life and the lives of your neighbors. DATA CENTER NEWS

Data Centers have been on the minds of many people in our community and in some cases in their back yards! There are many unknowns and questions unanswered. Just recently Governor Moore signed an executive order on data centers. First let’s take a look at the events thus far, “taken from the Interfaith Power and Light (IPL)”.

August 2024 - Since the summer of August 2024, Terra Innovations has been seeking to develop a data center in Dickerson on the site of a former coal-fired power plant.

June 2026 - County Executive Marc Elrich signed an executive order on June 12th directing the Department of Permitting Services to “temporarily pause the acceptance and processing of permit applications for new data centers in Montgomery County.”

September 2026 – Governor Wes Moore issued a state wide executive order https://governor.maryland.gov/media/1083 on Data Centers. This executive order will protect ratepayers, will include environmental protection, and will ensure transparency and accountability. To learn more about this go to: https://governor.maryland.gov/news/press-releases/governor-moore-signs-executive-order-codifying-responsible-data-center-development-framework.

This is good news for our communities, but we still must stay diligent and ask questions!

BIBLE STUDY – MONDAY, OCTOBER 26

Join us for Bible Study at 7:00 PM in the Library as we explore Exodus 28. This chapter describes the sacred garments worn by Aaron and the priests, including a breastplate bearing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. “Representar a Cristo Donde Quiera Que Estamos.”

No siempre hacen falta muchas palabras.

Bendiciones,

Avin Lalmansingh, Betsy Hasegawa, Clay Kolle, Danielle Allen, Diane Leach, Janet King, Marge Kling, Ruth Anna Skowronski
